Looks like I'll be heading to Memphis during Thanksgiving week. Give me your offbeat/unusual, quirky, or hidden Memphis gems. TIA. Prob staying downtown near Beale.

Don't venture off the beaten path. That's about all I got. Elvis Presley home is not in a good location either.

What do you like?

Golf? TPC Southwind is where they play the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Mirimichi is Timberlake’s course up in Millington (~30-40 minutes from downtown).

Live music? Beale is mostly full of cover bands. Check out South Main downtown for more local stuff. Or Midtown venues.

Have kids? Memphis Zoo is great. Memphis Botanic Garden has a feature called My Big Backyard that kids love. Children’s Museum of Memphis.

Museums? Brooks Museum, Pink Palace Museum, Dixon Gallery and Gardens (art), Metal Museum, Center for Southern Folklore, Civil Rights Museum.

Food? Rendezvous is a tourist trap. Central BBQ is better IMO (BBQ nachos and make sure you ask for them on house-made chips). Great steak at Folk’s Folly. Great wine selection at McEwen’s. Flight is a nice downtown place, hard to get a reservation at night. Majestic downtown for brunch. On Beale there is a place called Itta Bena that is upstairs from BB King’s and actually pretty quiet inside.

Random fun things? Watch the ducks at the Peabody. They come down in the morning (I believe around 10 a.m. but check specifics) and up afternoons (I believe around 4 pm). They do a little program with it.

Check the Choose 901 and I Love Memphis blogs for specific things happening while you are there. Both have good event calendars and as it gets closer they may have posts specific to your travel dates.

The stuff you’ve heard of...Graceland isn’t in a great area. If you like Elvis go. If you don’t then you aren’t missing much. Pretty sure St Jude offers tours but check if it is around the holidays.

Raifords. Don't get there before midnight though and it is cash only. Mollie Fontaine's is pretty cool too.

Gus's for the best hot chicken in Tennessee.

Wiseacre brewery has a lot of good beers. Gotta Get Up to Get Down is one of the best stouts out there.

too bad baseball season will be over
the redbirds park is awesome, and cheap

if you've never been to graceland and have any affinity for the king, you should see it. last time we were there for a weekend we stayed at the peabody, caught a game, ate at rendezvous, ate at gus's, went to graceland. i realize those are all touristy places but we had a blast. and definitely see the ducks

I watched Memphis Jones perform at B.B. Kings on Beale St. The food was really good and I thought they played a great show, quit an entertaining group.

Most cities have a bad part of town, Memphis has a good part of town!

Somebody always calls the Rendezvous a tourist trap and maybe it is, but I still think it is a must. If you are already downtown you might as well.

Germantown Commissary or The Rendezvous are solid choices.
