Virtual racing is one of the saddest things I've ever done and I can't wait for it to go away.
Helped a guy over the weekend complete his virtual Snowdrop 55.
55 hours to see how many miles you can do. He did 201 miles in 54 hours and change. his goal was 200. Oh man he was a trainwreck sunday morning with 20 miles to go. Hallucinating, babbling to himself.
What a trooper though, he powered through that storm came through on Sat.

I may be out there doing the half for a training day. I'm trying to talk my wife into doing it since Houston was cancelled.
If anyone is interested in doing the Rerun 5x5k trail run in Navasota, TX let me know. I can get a small discount code for that.

So he went about 4 miles an hour for a couple of days? That’s insane.

It looks like they're capping the combined entries @ 600 HM and Full, so y'all may want to decide quick. I can see alot of people who were training for La. making the change since it's the same day and (relatively) close geographically. Do you know anything about the course topography? It looks to be near or at U of H Sugarland? I'm assuming pancake flat? It looks to be a 13.1 mile loop X 2.

Was this the MRE athlete?

Flat. Just some slight inclines and downs like maybe 2-3 on the course out and back. Nothing crazy or exciting either. Not many come out along the course.

Are you familiar with that group?

Yes my wife is a member and I will probably be soon for 100k training

Cool. Was she out there over the weekend? I’ve known the guy and his wife for a while now. I know a couple of the coaches and people in the group. I’m about to go swim with one.

We live in NWLA but communicate with a lot of the crew regularly. Her coach is RD. Really good program and has helped her to excel.

My old run coach’s wife is a world class 24 he race runner. She runs all kinds of these 24/48 he endurance races. Really crazy stuff.

Change to my plan post White River was adding tempo runs to my plan. For my last cycle I only did mile repeats.
Had 4 mile tempo today @ 8:11 which was a little fast for 8:15 goal. Very tough but in a fun way.
My coach and I will work to lengthen these to make physical & mental improvements.

Post-Christmas Check-In- how are things going on the trails, tracks, treadmills, and pavement?
My weekly mileage has taken a nosedive. I try for four days/week but realistic is three. No more double digits runs, though I could have stretched it to 10 today. My pace is much worse, my heart rate is much worse, and my diet is not helping.
I fear this will be a long winter without focus.

McVick,
Appreciate the transparency with your post.
I'm trying to stay out of my own head....I need to understand training runs are to train & I'm fighting the urge to turn each one into a race...the marathon has caused some confidence and some doubt...Sometimes I think the only way to not bonk on mile 19 again is to go run 20 @ marathon pace haha

Yeah, I have anxiety kicking in already for the Sugarland race! Doing a good bit of MP work, but nothing near 20 @ pace, just following the plan. Has anybody NOT felt like death @ 20? Somebody please tell me they haven’t, haha.
As far as my status, pretty much plugging away, starting week 18/20 tomorrow for the race on 1/17. Long runs of only 14, 12 left. I’ve done 3x18, 2x20 & a 22 mile long run, so I just have to trust that I’m where I need to be. Dealing with some behind the knee pain within the last week, although it may (hopefully) be getting better. Popliteus muscle? Definitely not jumping off the plan now, against conventional wisdom, of course.
The Sugarland course looks pretty boring, albeit flat and it’s a loop so at least that’s better than a P2P as far as dealing with winds. We’ll see. Honestly the thing that concerns me most are leg cramps. I’ve had some pop up before at the end of hot long runs. Planning to pop some salt/Electrolyte tabs prior and as needed/every hour during the race.
Nice to check in!

I’ve decided that my next and possibly last marathon is whenever my New York make up race kicks in (21,22 or 23).
In the meantime I think I’ll focus on quality over quantity. I did a lot of miles this year and set a few PRs but since only 2 of them came in a race and I’m always in no man’s land, hitting the track seems like the more pleasant option. No distractions, just me and the clock.
I think keeping it around 33-3500 would enable a few more Q sessions and improve my overall mid-long distances. Talking 5-15k.
I think I’m capable of sub 16 @ 40 (my 5k PR this year came off a track workout that was 2 tempo 5ks 17:50s then a 16:20). I’m still figuring out what my strengths are as a runner. Durability and a high pain threshold had me thinking I was more a distance monster where I now realize I might be more balanced.
Last but not least, I’m not going to go out of my way to have a miserable run or race. Of the in person races I’ve done or attempted this year, all were 15 or more degrees above average temps. frick that. Paying to be miserable because the weather hardly cooperates (especially in the south) is worse than paying to sit my arse on the couch.
Goals 2021:
15:59 5K (PR @ 39 16:23)
25: something 8K (PR @ 39 27:00)
32:something 10K (PR @ 39 33:something)

Do any of you use running caps? I'm looking for something I can use year round. I want something comfortable for summer use that won't flop around, is breathable, and wicks away moisture. I also want to be able to use it in rain or snow under a hood. The purpose here wouldn't be for warmth or water proofing. Rather, it would simple be to help keep rain or snow out of my eyes and help keep my hood from lifting up and blowing back. I can wear my beanie beneath it for warm in cold weather.

Ciele, Patagonia, Boco Gear, or I’ve seen a new brand called Rnnr that looks interesting.

I wear boco trucker hats. Gotten them from races and my local running store.

I wear a Outdoor Research Swift hat and love it.
Light and breathable, flexible enough to fold and stash in my waistband if I want it off mid-run.
