It was fun. Not too many switch backs and a bit of climbs. Really rocky.
My kinda trail to be honest. I enjoy rocky desert running more than others in the southeast.
Have you ever done any of the Xterra Trail races in Texas?

Tried Maurten for the first time yesterday on my long run
Pretty fantastic. Dont think I’ll be able to justify the price for regular use but I’ll probably pick some up for my next race.

No I’ve mainly stuck with Spectrum, TROT, and Tejas Trails.
While TROT outs on some great races and is the biggest of the three, I’m not a fan of their leadership.

I’ll have to order some online. Don’t have any at academy.

I may be wrong, but I don't see where any of the gels really sets themselves apart from the others based on a nutritional standard. Seems to me the biggest factors in deciding what gel to buy is taste, consistency, and caffeine vs no caffeine.
I prefer to use SIS gels mid run because they have a good bit of sodium (300 mg).

I've come to the conclusion that my stomach can't handle any of the sweet flavored gels, so only Maurten for me from here on out. I had an old Cliff Gel rotting in my bag, so I slammed it after 6 on a 10 miler last week and my stomach locked up. Same thing happened with the Gu gel that I had when me and you ran. I have a couple of Gu left that I will make myself eat, but only gonna buy the Maurten from now on.

I don’t disagree with that.
I’ve tried SIS, was a little too liquid in consistency for my liking and was very large/heavy for me. Could make it work if I had too though.

No denying that Maurtens are the best in terms of taste and consistency. But I have children to feed and mortgages to pay.

Baller! I guess that beach house doesn't pay for itself.
For real though, I only use gels on long runs and longer races, so that's maybe 4 a month at most.

I've kind of heard that about the Brazos Bend race before.
The guy who puts on most of the Texas trail series for Xterra is awesome.

OK, I guess I have to try this liquid gold stuff.

Make sure it's the Maurten 4% gels.

I've been using cheaper gels (GU, Hammer) for training runs and Maurten during races. I have no issues when taking the Maurten gels. The others can sometimes cause me problems. But they're are only 1/4 of the cost. Thinking about getting some SIS gels for training runs, since they might represent a middle ground in price and quality.

I used a Honey Stinger during my trail race this past weekend. Seemed to do the trick. Only $1.50 at REI

So I took a couple of days of good old fashioned sulking from my bonk the other day and am pretty committed to doing what’s necessary to not fail again like that.
I didn’t have “great” nutrition. I’ve slipped back into dipping a bit with all my travel, and I didn’t follow any sort of training plan ramping up to the race. Just kinda maintained mileage.
Not happening again.
I’m taking a few days to feel all the way better as my arse still has a gooseegg on it and my legs aren’t all the way back under me but I’ve almost convinced my wife to let me do a 50k in late September.
It’s a lot higher mileage than I’m used to but 5+ months is plenty of time and I’m committed to dropping a lot of things that I think are holding me back.

You’ve got this, man. Sign up for that 50k and burn it down.

Good news, 3. You are pretty damn consistent with your training and I’d be interested to see what you can do following a plan. Travel for work is tough on the nutrition Brah, I did it for years.

That's the real competition. Win that, and 50k would simply be your victory lap.

Finally had a decent run this morning. Weather was a perfect 60 degrees with no wind. Hip issues were dormant. Each mile was faster than the last and I averaged 8:34 over 5 miles. Nothing is posting from my watch to Strava, though it may show up in 12-18 hours. I think I will run a few 5ks in April/May.
