Yup, and the work is usually done by some kid making 10 bucks an hour who just graduated from installing car stereos at Best Buy.

Untrue. While there are some departments that do not have to pay, there are those that pay a “gas fee”. The logic of running vehicles can basically be summed up by the fact that the radio, computer etc are charged while vehicle is on. My husband doesn’t have time for sit down lunch break so congratulations to those guys!

Did you ever think maybe those guys “protecting and serving” are paid about as well as the teenager flipping your burger and in order to make ends meet, they can spend their “day off” working? Did you know some of those guys actually have to pay a “detail fee” for use of the car and gas during that time?

But hey, who doesn’t love getting charged more to work more? Isn’t that what our entire economic system is based on?

Um.... Renting a vehicle to work a private detail isnt paying more to work more.

Why do firemen take the fire truck to Albertsons ??

I think they have to. The truck has to be wherever the truck's crew is and the entire crew has to be with the truck. If they get a call, they can't be scattered to the winds or away from the truck.

It's gotta be fun when everyone on the crew except Carl wants to go somewhere, but they can't go because Carl doesn't want to and refuses to get in the truck.

fricking Carl.

I said for a long time that most fire depts are a waste of money. The high costs they require does not match the value they provide. But be careful calling out the sacred cow known as the fire dept. You will get bashed with the quickness. Most fire workforces could be reduced by at least 60%.

Here and in many other places all fireman are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians, they are often first on the scene and stabilize a patient before the Paramedics arrive with the ambulance. They respond to most emergency medical calls in case assistance is needed to extract a person from their house, for example someone has a health incident, calls 911 but cant walk to unlock the door to let paramedics in, or the patient is on a upper floor and it will be impossible for just two people to get them down on a gurney. To answer the question of why don't they just wait to see if they are needed before rolling out, many times the difference between someone living or dying is how long it takes to get them specialized treatment at a hospital. Around here even if they never took a fire call the number of lives saved would justify the existence of the department.

If a patrol officer is willing to die to keep you safe, I am pretty sure the least he ask is that he is relatively cool and comfortable before he goes.

This is hyperbole, but hopefully you get the point.

And spare us all the waste of tax dollars/fuel argument. It makes you sound jelly and immature.

To keep all the electronics like the laptops, radar guns, computer other computer stuff, cell phones, dispatch radio... you know all that stuff cool.

A cop here also said it's b/c all of their equipment takes so long to boot. Specifically address finding apps on the laptop. If they have an emergency, they can't take several minutes to figure out how to get there. And if you know anything about government IT equipment, it's not usually the swiftest.

They're running mobile wifi, switches and all kinds of interesting stuff in their cars as well.

Besides all that, they are sitting in 90+ degree heat with a kevlar vest and 20lbs of equipment on. I'm good with giving them some AC while they're sitting somewhere.

Because they don't pay for gas.

You have no right to question what the police do. They are out there protecting us and running a car while eating lunch does not bother me at all.

Is it protocol to leave the vehicle running

yes, computers and radio must be on at all times and it takes quite a bit of juice to run that stuff, yes it can last a while (15-20 minutes) without the engine running, but it they cant start the car people might literally die because they cant respond quickly.

because of that its department policy that unless they are finished their patrol and entering the station, then the cars must stay running at all times.

its one of those "for the publics safety" precautionary rules
