Why do cops (without k9s) keep their vehicles running at all times?

Stopped to get food yesterday and there were 3 cop cars parked in the lot, all running, with air conditioner condensation steadily dripping underneath. None of them were k9. I figured something was up inside. Went in and the cops were sitting down for lunch. Is it protocol to leave the vehicle running for lunch break or did they just not want their cars to warm up? Seems like a waste of fuel.

To keep all the electronics like the laptops, radar guns, computer other computer stuff, cell phones, dispatch radio... you know all that stuff cool.

But you better not text and drive or you'll get a ticket

Why do they park in the cop 69 position when they're talking?

because they might have a fire call. Same with the gym. I've never seen them leave the fire truck running while they are eating lunch, though

Yes it is protocol. The electronics inside take a while to get up and running again, and they must be ready to respond to a call immediately. If they were to leave the electronics on and turn the car off, it would kill their battery.

Every second counts when a call comes in on the radio. Them Duke boys won't get away this time!

Really makes you wonder how any crime was ever solved before 1995.

You'd hate for someone to not get an inspection sticker ticket because of this. I find it a fiscally responsible policy. Hell, it's only several thousands of dollars per unit per year to keep them running so whatever.

Common sense answers this.

That idle time isn’t where all the gas is wasted, it’s wasted in extra duty details where they sit on the side of the road or in a parking lot for 7 hours with the car running. That wastes more gas each yeah than their lunch ever could, but there is no way to change that because that is an accepted perk of law enforcement is using your vehicle for extra details.

Here in Tuscaloosa the fire department rolls to every accident. Even a minor one where their are no injuries and there is no need for a tow truck.

Why? Because it allows the fire department to say that they had 10x more "calls" than just for fires. But what it really does is cost a fortune to maintain these $750,000 ladder trucks, more frequent oil changes, fuel, tires, wear and tear.

But then they can say our trucks have high miles and we need new ones.

It is just a racket.

FWIW most, if not all, have a vehicle fee when a unit is required.
