I've used an old Marlin with a cheap scope for about 40 years literally. I'm just wanting some modern technology if it's better than what I have.

I thought this post was sarcasm. People actually buy 3k MSRP squirrel rifles?

Buy a god damn Marlin like an American.

Their little arms aren't long enough to handle a rifle. I'd look at a handgun for your squirrel.

I still use my Marlin 60 my dad gave me for my 13th birthday 33 years ago. I put a cheap Simmons 3x9x32 scope on it. And I bet you can't find a more accurate rifle.

I was at the range a few months ago and set up 10 spent 308 brass at 50 yards. Went 10 for 10 shooting them from a rest.

dozens of options as I'm partial to the 17's due to their flat shooting trajectory and accuracy.
(top) Sako Finnfire, Lilja 17HMR, Jewell 12 ounce trigger, Leupold 36x pictured was used to sight in at 100 yds.
(Bottom) Same action, trigger and barrel, yet sporting a Burris compact 3-x12x32mm AO and chambered in 17Mk2
I also have a Lilja 22LR barrel that can be switched onto either action

??"Perfect"?? That's hard to say. I've got 3 squirrel hunting rifles that i really like, but know that any of them are "perfect." It depends as well on what kind of squirrel hunting you're doing.

My most used is an "old" Ruger 10/22 I bought over 40 years ago. A few years ago I upgraded it w/ a Hogue overmolded stock, Federson custom barrel, Burris 4-14X scope w/ "Ballistic Plex" reticle, extended mag release lever and Silencerco Spectre II suppressor. Internally it has a custom recoil buffer and custom trigger. Using CCI med velocity RN bullets, it shoots more accurately than I can hold. I use it for still hunting as well as hunting w/ a dog.

#2 in use is a Savage bolt action in 17 Mach 2 w/ a Mueller 4-14X scope w/ mil dots. The 17 M2 shoots much flatter than the 22LR but is not as destructive on game as is the 17 HMR. For still hunting, especially in open woods, the 17M2 is the ideal round. The only problem w/ the 17M2 is very limited ammo availability. This gun is used in both still hunting and sometimes hunting w/ a dog. It likes Hornady 20 gr plastic tip bullets. This one's pure factory, except for adjusting the factory trigger to 2.5#.

#3 is a 35 year old Ruger 77/22 w/ a Simmons 4-14X scope. It has a custom trigger that breaks at 3#. I shoot Remington HP "Golden Bullets" in it. Since buying the 17M2 and getting the suppressor, the 77/22's seen little hunting activity. I've considered buying a custom threaded barrel for it, but will instead probably buy a CZ 455 American w/ threaded barrel. Right now the 77/22's set up for "night patrol" w/ a green light and CCI "Quiet 22" ammo.

I couldn't see myself spending $2k on a gun for deer, much less squirrels. That's some hardcore squirrel hunting.

I stick with a good ole Winchester 22 semi-auto. It was my grandfather's gun, and a damn fine one at that.

For a real world price that a regular dude like me can justify, I really like my CZ 455 American. If money is no object, there are some fine rifles out there. But, I'd be scared to scratch them, so maybe the CZ IS the perfect squirrel gun since it's nice but not too nice to actually use.

Mossbird 4-10 pump. Super fun. I do want to add a .17hmr to the collection.

I have my sights on this beauty. I've shot a marlin model 60 for years now (redfield 2x7x33 scope) and it is too light for me with the synthetic stock. I also want a bolt action so that it matches the action of my deer rifle.

I will probably never get it because I mostly use a 870 12 gauge for squirrels.

Another vote for the Finfire in .22. Mine has a6x42 Leupold with the parallax set to 50 yds.

I have a .22 over .410 and it’s a great squirrel gun for me. Can even pop the occasional rabbit that kicks out
