This is more of a PSA than anything else. My mom always insisted that I never had Chickenpox. My pcp was pushing the shingles vaccine and I told him what my mom said and that info on the vaccines said that it is not for people who have never had Chickenpos. Well, guess what? Mom was wrong. I must have had Chickenpox because I have Shingles. I had severe pain for two weeks before the blisters showed up. It’s been four weeks now and still having pain and it’s nerve pain. I can say that this is only second to the pain of a cervical nerve root compression. There is nothing you can do to get away from it, nothing. If you are old enough and had Chickenpox in the past, please get the Shingles vaccine. It’s not 100%, but I would take anything if there was a chance I would not get shingles. Most people don’t know that the pain of shingles can become a lifelong problem and that over age 60 it increases the risk of stroke and heart attack. Get the vaccine, please.

I had a shingles episode a few years ago. Thought it was just a rash. By the time I saw a doctor it had almost passed. I didn't initially suspect shingles because I always hear how debilitatingly painful it's supposed to be and I just wasn't really impressed at all by the level of pain.

Fortunately, I haven’t had shingles. I have had quite a few patients with them and I know it’s pretty painful. As a kid I had the worst case of chickenpox. Even at 4 years old I can remember the horrible way I felt. Hope it clears up soon.

People that tell me they haven't had chicken pox (prior to vaccinations) are morons or braggards and sometimes both.

Felt like I had broken ribs and I couldn't get a good nights sleep for 4 weeks.

Lyrica sucks BTW...most useless medication ever.

I got it when i was around 35-36, but luckily it was caught early and had no pain or issues with it.

The medical director of my department(an infectious disease doctor) has an interesting theory.

He says that maybe a reason why shingles cases now seem to be more frequent and worse than before the chickenpox vaccine is this...

Because of the vaccine...people that had chickenpox before are not as exposed to people with chickenpox as they were before the vaccine. He wonders if being more frequently exposed to those with chickenpox maybe helps boost your own immunity against shingles?

Remember...if you had chickenpox before...you can't get chickenpox again. You just have that virus lying dormant in your system.

I didn't think that I had chickenpox as a kid but apparently must have as I got shingles a few years ago. My shingles weren't that bad, possibly from going to the doctor fairly soon after the initial symptoms.

I had those nerve zaps in my scalp for about 24-48 hours but they went away after taking whatever was prescribed.

What exactly did they treat it with? It's a virus and pretty much has to run its course.I was just treated with Hydrochodone,Lyrica and pain patches.

You can take Valtrex for it.

I got a VERY mild form of shingles when I was in nursing school(mine just looked like a bad itchy allergic reaction on my leg). Likely from all the stress. I was given valtrex by the doctor to take that helped it go away quicker.

I never got chicken pox as a kid. When I was 35, one of my kids got chicken pox and before we knew what was going on, I had them.

I dont know about shingles but I will tell you that it was one of the worst things I have ever gone through. I was miserable for 10 days or so. My face was burning so bad, I thought it was going to cook off my head.

Doctor ended up giving me a very high dose of something to knock me out. I would sleep for days at a time.

I got shingles at 29. On my forehead, eye area, and scalp. Horrible pain. Luckily I was prescribed and started taking Valtrex early on (within the first 24-48 hrs). If you don't take it in the beginning then it isn't much use. Frick shingles. They say I'm still too young to get the vaccine, but I need that vaccine. I don't want to ever have to deal with that again.

Creams and other things like that don't do jack. Have to get pain meds for any relief. Pain meds and Valtrex helped me stay sane.

Do kids still get chicken pox?

I had them 30 years ago but I haven’t seen any of my friends kids have them in years.

I got shingles back in February this year. Apparently it was very mild bc it wasn’t really painful like you hear about. Just a little rash on my back that popped up one day and it was itching on and off. I thought it was poison ivy but got it looked at anyway. The PA said it looked just like when she got it after having her baby. I’ve heard horror stories about how painful it is but I was lucky I guess. Started me on valtrex and the itching stopped after a couple days.

My friends doctor told her to get the vaccine the day she turned 50 so she went and got it. Two days later the vaccine put her in the ER with extreme weakness, shortness of breath, elevated heart rate and several other issues. Be aware that nothing is harmless when you start shooting it into your body.
