One side of the final 16 seems top heavy, while the other side is a who's who of futbol powerhouses. Throw the game?

Both teams have a big incentive to lose.

Normally I don’t think the teams would consider it, but they might here. There’s big incentive to finish second with how the bracket has ended up.

Win the group, and you get (likely) Senegal or Colombia in the Round of 16, not an easy game, and then probably Brazil in the quarterfinals. If you finish second, you probably play Japan in the Round of 16 and either Sweden or Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

That’s a much easier road to the semifinals. It will be interesting to see how the match goes tomorrow. Right now they are tied in everything except Fair Play points. If both teams refuse to score, we might see something crazy where both managers throw on little-used players to get yellow cards and lower the Fair Play score so their team finishes second.

The schedule tomorrow could either make this England Belgium game much better or much worse. If they played the first time slot tomorrow, you at least have the possibility of playing Colombia if you lose. Instead, Group H plays first. So, if Japan beats Poland, you'll have a situation where the losing team knows it will face Japan then Sweden/Switzerland. FIFA has to be pulling for a Colombia win and a Japan loss/draw.

I predicted before this tournament that Japan was going to get out of their group and surprise people

England/Belgium better not sleep on them

Kagawa and Honda are the truth

Makoto Hasebe is very underrated, too. Great veteran player. Japan might make a run if things go their way.

I don’t want England vs Belgium to turn into a violent slog-fest tomorrow, but the sadistic side of me thinks it’s kind of hilarious FIFA’s new Fair Play system could backfire spectacularly in exactly this scenario. Don’t think this is what they had in mind.

You might very well see players intentionally get yellow cards for dissent in order to lower their team’s Fair Play score and ensure second place in the group.

Good point but what’s to stop the ref from recognizing it and going straight to a red to send a message to knock it off?

Good point.

Your sides right now are:
Uruguay
Portugal
France
Argentina
Mexico
Brazil

vs.

Spain
Russia
Croatia
Denmark
Sweden
Switzerland

eta: Think of how crazy it would be if Germany would have won 1-0 and been in Mexico's spot. Or if Mexico and Germany would have won today.

Time to start the lone arsenal player then...Danny Welbeck come on down. That has to be a guaranteed loss.

You can get beat by any team nowadays. In the 2016 Euros Belgium supposedly got the easy bracket and got destroyed by Wales. England is just England, I wouldn't trust them against any team. They just find ways to lose.

They do have a guy who single handedly beat a ‘good side’ in Liverpool. No one should be surprised.

I was actually thinking about the uneven brackets when filling out the Soccer Board prediction thread and I kept ending up with 6 of the 8 strongest teams on the same side.

I wonder if some of this is due to FIFA's horribly inaccurate ranking system instead of simply tournament "chaos".

I just don't buy this at all

people are discounting Sweden for whatever reason; all they did is punk Mexico and play Germany even for 94 minutes, after qualifying by beating Italy

Croatia has been one of the top 3 teams in the entire tournament. Namewise sure Argentina is better, but Croatia already beat the crap out of them within the last week

I wouldn't have been surprised if this joke was made by an Arsenal fan. I don't think any of us have any faith in Welbeck anymore.

FIFA's horribly inaccurate ranking system

I had to look it up because I don't pay enough attention sometimes, but I don't believe the ranking system was off.

Rankings just help determine pots so groups aren't entirely too weak or too strong (i.e. having Germany, Brazil, Belgium, and Portugal in one pool). For that part, it was right. Teams in Pots 1 and 2 are 12 for 14 so far, and 12 of 16 if Columbia doesn't get in. Group H is the ultimate spoiler, not to mention the lowest of the groups (regarding FIFA's own points rankings). Of those four non-Pot 1/2, Denmark would have been in Pot 2 had it not been for Russia hosting.

Round of 16? Look at the outliers. Germany didn't show up and they'd be in the Swede's position if they did. In an ideal world the Croats and Argentina are in opposite positions. Denmark looks weird, but consider that Peru wouldn't look like it belonged either. And then there is Russia, who are only there because the hosts get a bye to the 16, and because Uruguay didn't play the smart game everyone else is saying Belgium/England should play.

You're going to play someone in the Top echelon of World Football by the end anyway.
