Morning guys, looking for a little motivation or help with goal setting. Just got back from a 17 day vacation to Europe. I ate and drank whatever I wanted, ran twice, lifted twice, and walked about 80 miles in that time.

Now that I'm back home, I have no goals or gym aspiration. I don't really care. I have been consistently going to the gym for 5 years now (4+ days/wk). In the past, my goals have been to get fitter, gain strength and size, lift a certain amount on a particual lift, etc... I'm having a hard time giving a shite.

I know my motivation usually waxes and wanes, but it's never been this low. What should my goals be, besides just going to the gym?

First, do it and that will compel motivation. I've busted this quote before, but "Motivation follows action, action rarely follows motivation."

Next, select the goal you like the most and start achieving it. For me, it's weight/strength tests. Pick one you like and get in there and set yourself on the road to achieve it.

Being a lean, mean, pussy fricking, strong arse motha fricka. That’s just me though. If you don’t have goals you will have a hard time man. Find something you want to achieve and chase it.

Do something that requires you to be in good shape so you can use gym training to make you better at that sport/hobby/whatever. Kinda like a football player needing to work out to be better on the field. For example, I do mixed martial arts. Specifically BJJ and boxing. I am 46. My goal is to have good cardio and be explosive because I train with kids that have shite tons of horsepower and my goal is not to be owned by them on a mat. So, that is my motivation.

I play pick up basketball occasionally, but that's about it. I'm 31, I still have a little of that, but the younger guys are quick on the court

I didn't have much motivation but joined a gym just to give it a try and the motivation instantly kicked in.

Yes, I do. But I usually don't follow class workouts. I follow 531 and throw in 1-2 interval workouts per week.

Are you more into lifting heavy or killing Benchmark workouts?

I guess both.. I have a few benchmarks I think are useful, I think a lot of them are stupid and are reps for the sake of doing reps.

I like to deadlift and clean. Not good at squat and bench, but that's obviously what I need work on, so those 2 just aren't fun for me.

Maybe run a deadlift specific program for a few months and then transition back.

Like you say, working hard on a specific lift is absolutely a motivational thing.

Like Rep said set a goal to increase your Deadlift and one of the lifts you are not good at and just focus on those. Maybe that will give you the motivation. Also if there is a gymnastics movement that you currently are unable to do but want to learn, focus on doing that. I can do most gymnastic movements so if you want help I can either help you myself or I can find someone that can help.

Gymnastics is my thing, I crush gymnastics and running.

I appreciate all the suggestions, I think I will do as you said and run a single lift specific program and see where it takes me. Probably really fo us on deadlift since I like it, and throw in every thing else after that.

Me too but I can't lift much weight though. I'm starting a strength program next week. This week I'm testing then I'm going to try to increase my lifts.

dedication is much more important that motivation. Motivation comes and goes. But honestly you just need to find something that excites you. I suggest you read the linked book and find one or two that make your dick hard and training towards those goals
