I currently have a 6yr old Husq, 54" cut with a 24 dual Kohler, etc.

Bout to wear out.

Looking at the Bad Boys, Gravelys, Hustlers, and loving the Spartan. That thing is build like a tank. One problem, fairly new. Wanting something more up to the task this time, that will last much longer but still at a decent price. Any suggestions? Experiences? thanks...Rev!

Gonna need a $ amount you are planning to spend. Sounds like you want a semi-pro type mower which will probably run you about $5k

I have a hustler raptor limited that was 3k with 10% off coupon. It alright I guess. Runs good and cuts good...but will beat the hell out of you.

Gravely in that range. Maybe Scag.

Everyone will chime in and say hustler, bad boy, John Deere, toro, and probsbly a bunch of others, but within your range you will be able to put yourself in a commercial grade mower that is extremely durable if you go with Gravely.

Just for shits consider a hydrostatic stand on mower like a Gravely Pro Walk or Pro Turn. They are trending up big among the pro turf folks and are twice as versatile as a sit down zero turn.

I’m sure things have changed in the last 20 years, but I tested a scag stand on...that damn thing liked to have killed me. I ended up with an ex mark.

OP, I recommend the exmark. My guys beat the hell out it and it kept on cutting. My current yard guy has one and loves it.

In 2004 I had the same decision to make and decided on the Dixie Chooper, paid 8k for the 52 inch heavy duty. All I can tell you is that 14 years later it cuts exactly the same as the day I bought it and has many many more years left in her.

I've had my Gravely about 11 years now. I don't remember if its a 54 or 56 but at the time of purchase it was the biggest in their residential line. The next size up (60") is a commercial mower. Mine has a welded deck that is suspended by what looks like pieces of logging chain. Heavy duty!

One thing I did at purchase was have the seat swapped out. The 60" commercial mower came with what feels like an air ride seat that is adjustable for your body weight but the mower I was buying didn't. It had a regular rigid mount seat. I think it ended up costing an extra 125 bucks which is nothing but it is so worth it.

In the BR area.

Gravely your best bang for the buck and get better service. You will not see a lot of smaller dealers carry them as they have to have x amount of dollars in inventory. They make a solid product. Been around along time and you will see municipalities use them.

Exmark their lower end lines is basically junk worse than other lines as this is not their niche. They are cheaply built to try to compete with other lines that do it better. Higher end lines over $5k are great products and a lot better than Spartan, Badboy, and Hustler on price and quality as this is their niche.

Badboys and Spartans are overpriced and have pulley issues. Residential line at best. Overpriced Pig with lipstick. They have too many spindle and pulley issues to be classed with gravely and higher end Exmark. Their pricing also higher when you get in higher level mower than other companies while getting an avg product. I guess you get a cool bumper sticker. Will a cool looking bumper sticker cut grass?

I have posted about my mower a few times on here...

I had a similar situation about 4 years ago and I ended up with a Ferris IS700Z.

I was looking in the $5k range and what I found was that most of the mowers in the $5k range are basically upper end residential models. They did not have any of the upgraded features of the lower end commercial mowers. Those lower end commercial mowers are in the $7k to $9k range.

Most of those $5k mowers have 2800 pumps and usually run about 7mph-7.5mph. The Ferris IS700Z has the 3400 pumps (2 steps up) and runs 10mph. It also has a suspension system and a high quality deck.

The Ferris comes in at just a little above $6k and I thought this was the best bang for my buck.

Bruh, did you ever change the oil or grease it?

Get a scag with a Kawasaki. I got my scag in 2005 - still runs like a champ, I've only had to put it in the shop once for a minor oil leak. Oil change and greased regularly.

I got a hustler Fasttrak about a year ago. It’s been a great mower. I like the simplicity of the deck and the Kawasaki engine. I was buying a mower with the Kawasaki engine no matter what. It came down to Hustler or the Bad Boy Maverick. If you want a smooth ride look at the Maverick. I’d say most of the zero turns are going to beat you up unless you get a suspension seat upgrade or it have some kind of suspension. Hustler makes an upgrade to the front legs that has a leg that absorbs some of the bumps. Bad boy has a rubber pad type suspension that seems to work well.

The Hustler dealer said the worst thing you can do to a zero turn is wash it after every mow. It promotes rust as the water holds in certain spots. He said to blow it off and keep the under part of the deck clean. Maintenance it regularly and it’ll last a long time.

John Deere, straight up. Past few years they have really started putting MAJOR emphasis on small tractors and turf products and are using their mega ag manufacturing resources and knowledge to build zero turns and smaller products that have the same manufacturing standards which have made them the #1 ag manufacturer in the world. Plus, now they have lowered their pricing on these new machines to even compete with the likes of lighter-built machines like Exmark, Bad Boy, Cub, and Kubota... especially Kubota. They are THOROUGHLY in Deere’s crosshairs now and they are flipping Kubota customers left and right. Plus, unlike most of these other machines, Deere’s ag dealers also work on and service these machines at ANY Deere dealership. So you are also getting Deere fully certified technicians working on your lawnmower. That’s pretty impressive, and is like having the engineers who actually designed your car bolt-for-bolt performing repair and maintenance on it for you. And there will be a local dealership at your fingertips- so no “hope-for-the-best” shady, sketchy shade tree mechanics who are just “parts-changers” working on your equipment when you need repair. Plus, Deere offers their own great financing catered specifically to their type customers.

Do some research on Deere Ztraks (and smaller turf and residential machines) which have come out in the past 3 years before buying another brand. I think you’ll be happy you did.

Oh, also if you want to NEVER have to worry about a flat again, check out the new Tweels that come standard on z’s now. It’s freaking cool!

my old man bought a commercial deer from a guy who trades his in every year. It was 1 year old and looked to be in good condition. He has had numerous problems with it from the carburetors to the deck. it always seems to have something wrong with it.

on the other hand, my friend's dad had a business awhile back and ran the Ferris brand. He had two 60" sit down and one 42" or 48" walk behind with a Kawasaki engine. As one other poster mentioned the walk behind was pretty handy and he had a "trailer" for it you could sit on while mowing.

Just put a hydro belt on my Gravely HD52 last week. Thats the very first thing I’ve had to do with it in 6 years and 400 hours of rough service. I love that mower. A beast.

thanks for the advice, when I looked at the Badboy versus the Spartan, the spartan looked heads and tail better built.

It also demoed so much better on a hill or at a slant.

Still considering, round where I live it is mostly Bad Boy, Gravely, Hustler, and now Spartan. Very few John Deer others seen...

...because John Deere mechanics are actually engineers who designed the ag equipment?

They may be a great product, I have no idea. But it's hard to take a review like that seriously.
