I thought that the AMA intentionally throttles new med schools to create demand of medical doctors high; yet, I see that osteopaths are also members of the AMA. I'm guessing, as mentioned in this thread, osteopaths are filling the less desirable but much needed family medicine/pediatric roles?

Osteopaths study bones and what not while mds basically just learn medicine. My cousin sees an osteopath for his fibromyalgia and he’s great about letting my cousin get more medicine when he has a flare up or whatever

MDs generally thought to treat the disease, DOs thought to treat the whole person. DOs learn the voodoo of osteopathic manipulation along with the normal stuff MDs learn. Most DOs take the COMLEX along with the tests MDs take such as USMLE and all the step tests etc.

The folks I know are from well established DO schools like NYCOM or Michigan State. Not ULM.

well to be fair, the ULM school isn't even built yet.

I honestly don’t know a single doctor who belongs to the AMA. Most only pay dues to the American Academy of XYZ specialty.

These new DO schools almost feel like the private law schools that were in vogue 15 years ago, many of which are shutting down now. For profit universities. Without a subsequent rise in residency positions, I feel they might flake out.

The school isn’t even built yet and people are already shitting on it. Why can’t people be happy that we’re getting a new med school?

But, the United States needs around 60,000 more doctors.

Back when those private law schools were popping up, did we ever have a shortage of lawyers?

HAHA right. let alone a school to train some DOs for the south. DOs mostly go into primary care which the south has a major shortage of.

I think that settles the debate. Until further notice ULM can now carry the UL title and ULL has to return to using the ULL title

Monroe is hopping

Don’t know about hopping but at least there are people trying to make things happen. Even waging war with the degenerates to reclaim downtown. And I think it’s a worthy fight as long as Century Link stays here.

He would actually enjoy it I think. A big group of them have been meeting up at Forsythe park for years late at night. It’s a pretty inclusive place.

Baton Rouge really needs one. LSUHSC should be in BR not NOLA. Not everyone wants to up and move to Nola for med school. Monroe is a good place for med school no distractions like NOLA has.

Then they could go to the LSU med school in Shreveport.

Osteopaths have never been big in the south.
They're generally okay - do residencies with M.D.s I wouldn't use one, but they should be okay. Still, why not just run one of those primary care only medical schools?
They better not teach that cranial manipulation hokey.

Lol you saying you wouldn't use a DO is kinda silly... You know they learn the same medicine, take the same standardized tests, and do the same residency training as MDs....

Most DOs are indistinguishable from MDs.

ULM and Monroe are really not that much different than ULL. Lafayette probably has a little better night life and restaurants but really the actual schools are neck and neck.
