If that happened to me you would've witnesses the first baw to walk on water.

Sounds like his friend should actually caught the snake? I'd call Bs on it being a rattlesnake that fell out of a tree otherwise, first I've heard of them climbing trees. On a river, it would most likely be a moccasin.

Well that would explain why it fell. Probably climbed on a tree that sits at an angle and crawled out over the water unknowingly, then just crawled off thinking it was over ground..

rattlesnakes dont climb trees

Nah, you know a moccasin would have also bitten his buddy 12 times, bit a hole in the kayak, thus sinking it, would have chased the ambulance all the way to the hospital, bit some nurse and then killed the helicopter pilot.

I am surprised the news media used the term “fell”. Some people think snakes “jump” out of trees. Snakes can’t jump. I would not want a rattler or moccasin to fall or jump on me. .

This is basically how one of my employee's wife got bit by a moccasin the 2nd time. Small 2 person jon boat instead of a 'yak.

Damn, pretty rare to die from that when the bite is in an extremity

That was exactly what I thought. I know moccasins climb in trees but I have never heard or seen a rattlesnake in a tree. I have seen moccasins in trees while fishing

Something similar happened to my dad and his cousins. They were fishing in a small open boat on some river in Tennessee, when, from the trees overhead a copperhead dropped into the boat. When they tell the story, they were all cool as cucumbers; one of them reached down with the tip of his fishing pole and flipped the snake into the water. But what are they going to say?

They don't often climb trees, but on another forum, someone said there's been a lot of rain/flooding in that area recently so they might climb to avoid the floodwaters.
Also from that same snakebite forum, it was reported that he was bit in the torso and the hand, and someone quoted this:

Take it for what it's worth, as I'm quoting someone who is quoting someone: " the man that was bit is my baby brother. We go down this river every year for 4 days of camping and kayaking. He was bit 3 times total and it was because he tried to catch the snake( I know ,not a good idea) but he then kept it in his hand and kayaked another 10 mins or so down river to the closet house where people lived then we called 911 and he was swelling up very bad very fast and they rushed him in and got him stable over night then flew him to Charleston where he's expected to make a full recovery so hopefully he will learn a valuable lesson and not try this again next year when we return"

My wife didn't believe me when I told her like 90% of venomous snake bites are from people fricking around trying to pick up snakes. Now she's in the habit of reading all the news stories, and that fact pattern is in almost every single story.
Dude in Alabama picked up a coral snake recently and got tagged.

I'm sure they appreciated that. "Excuse me sir, do you see this pissed of rattlesnake right here? He just bit me 3 times and I'm in need of some medical assistance. May we come in and use your phone?"

I'd be in the 10% that would get bit without messing with the snake.
I was floating the river once in high school and some jackass picked up harmless water snake and threw it at me. I about had a heart attack.
Ugh, I hate snakes.

this but cane brake/timber rattlers are pretty at home near water. The only time I have seen venomous snakes UP in trees is during a flood....
something does not add up with this.
