Chile Bishops resign
This comes after Pope Francis' previous attempts to handle the situation including appointing Barros bishop of Osorno, Chile, in 2015 (who was considered one of the main people a part of the problem.)
All in all, the saga continues...what's it going on 20 years since the scandals started to unfold?
quote:
Every Chilean bishop offered to resign Friday (May 18) over a sex abuse and cover-up scandal, in the biggest shakeup ever in the Catholic Church's long-running abuse saga
quote:
all 31 active bishops and three retired ones in Rome had signed a document offering to resign and putting their fate in the hands of the pope
quote:
It marked the first known time in history that an entire national bishops conference had offered to resign en masse over scandal
quote:
"No one can exempt himself and place the problem on the shoulders of the others," Francis wrote in the document

After receiving the Scicluna-Bertomeu report, though, Francis did an about-face. Blaming a "lack of truthful and balanced information" about the case for his missteps, Francis invited the three main whistleblowers to the Vatican hotel he calls home so he could apologize in person.

As a Catholic, I hope I’m right that this particular problem has its roots in the mid twentieth century, and not further back than that.
If that’s so, then sadly it’s not surprising that much of the current leadership of the Church would be corrupt in this same way, just due to the fact that the last 30 years or so is when they would have reached positions of higher authority in the Church.

Resignations aren't enough for those that participated in or contributed towards the abuse of children.

Catholics man.
I wouldn't dare trust my child with a single one of their priests.

Religion and religious history is loaded with Homosexuals and Pedophilia. It is sick.

Was writing this in the last religious thread before it got locked down...
Church is politics. The invention of the monotheistic gods to better organize the people under state rule was far superior in ironing out disputes between city states and creating better alliances than the polytheism that was used 2000+ years before. But when these regions wanted to break away from corrupt foreign rule they had to create a sect in the church as well which is why you have all these different christian sects.
Of course Emperor Constantine couldnt just adopt Judaism bc then the power of the church would be in Jerusalem so he had to empower the christian sect so that he could have the church in Byzantium. And the fight over the power of this church would sway between Byzantium and Rome, then over to Habsburg rule depending on which ruling family was strongest at the moment. Thats why you have the famous saying that the Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, nor roman, nor an empire. (edited)
I will admit that it is probably best to still have religion going forward, after hearing so many christians say that if it werent for their religion they would not have a moral compass and would be incredibly bad people. I guess we really need religion to control so many crazies.

Before that, he was an ardent Catholic. He even earned the title "Defender of the Faith."
