No one with a thinking brain really needed evidence, but it seems some folks really rely on studies to tell them what should have been common sense.

New Data Show California Kids’ Math Achievement Took A Nosedive After Common Core

quote:

“[I]n the four years under Common Core, the number of eighth graders taking Algebra I in California dropped precipitously to 19 percent in 2017, taking California back to where it was around 1999, when early algebra taking was the privilege of the elite. And while all demographic groups lost ground, the loss for Latino and African American students was much deeper than for white and Asian Americans,” write Wurman and Evers, who both vainly voted against California adopting Common Core on a state commission. The graph below shows the deeper damage to minority students in more detail.

quote:

like nearly all states California abruptly ended its pre-Common Core tests, plus its end of course exams for classes like algebra and geometry. That means there is no measuring stick by which to equally compare pre-Common Core and post-Common Core tests. They simply stopped the non-Common Core tests one year and started up the Common Core tests the next, with no continuity between the two by which to gauge how Common Core compares to California’s previous high standards.

This is how to explain the graph below, which magically shows that the number of so-called “college-ready” high school graduates doubled overnight. It didn’t. California just dropped the bar and kept the label.

quote:

Common Core critics warned of all this beforehand and directly after during a wave of parent and teacher opposition once the public was allowed to learn what was going on: the lack of data by which to robustly evaluate how Common Core affects kids, the degradation of math instruction in a country already known for poor math instruction, the especially damaging effects on the most vulnerable kids, the lying to parents, students, and taxpayers about the quality of the classes their kids are taking and we’re all paying for.

You mean being arrogant enough to think you can reinvent simple arithmetic has consequences?

Whodathunkit?

ETA: It's super frustrating to me because I have a rising 6th grader who tests in the top 5% of ALL STUDENTS NATIONWIDE, and she can't do long division. That's just unreal. We're having to teach her long division and multiplication & division of fractions at home, because they're doing this crap by shading in boxes. It takes her forever to do even the simplest problems, and she is in the top 5% by THEIR metrics. It's obscene. I can't imagine what parents of kids with average intellect are going through. If she wasn't a dang genius I'm sure I'd want to rip my eyeballs out by now.

Common core would work if we would give the teachers raises

My mom is an elementary school teacher in Bossier Parish, she hates common core, as do most.

We need to rid ourselves completely of the DOE.

I've been saying it for years and I'll keep saying it.

The DOE's intentional effort to dumb down our society has worked beyond their wildest dreams.

I am a teacher and can tell you Comon Core is garbage. I am all for standards, but the methods associated with teaching Math is idiotic. Furthermore, our students are getting real good at reading a text and finding evidence of a claim, but they cannot tell you what it means. We are not teaching them how to think. We are teaching them regurgitation.

Exact same thing here. My kid scored a 1390 on the SAT, and a composite 32 on the ACT, but long division is a mystery that she cannot solve.

I've tried to explain it the old way, but it just confuses her, because the teachers want it solved the CC way.

BTW, my wife is a Core Advocate teacher and she can't explain it either.

The fact that people actually thought it a great idea to turn an entire generation into guinea pigs for this silliness is sickening.

My mom is a life-long educator and current elementary school principal, and she insists on pretending common core is awesome no matter how much evidence there is to show otherwise. I lose hope for our education system when educators I respect can't do anything but "tow the company line" on common core.

This is the worst part. They rolled this thing out with very little data to support that it could be successful. They hadn't even tested it properly at all. Well now we see the data they should have had to start with, because now it's been out there long enough to see how it can do, and the data shows it's garbage.

Regurgitation was the whole point. The entire point of common core is exactly this. They want mindless drones and not critical thinkers.

I'm not picking on you, but put y'all's money where your mouth is and demand your local school board stop taking federal money.

Your taxes will skyrocket and you won't have daytime babysitters any longer, though.

People claimed that was fake, but that's truly the kind of nonsense they pass off as math these days.

The silly thing is the following: arithemtic != mathematics

Why waste so much brainpower on something that a calculator can do for you correctly 100% of the time? Understanding the actual mathematics is much more important than arithmetic.

Looks like CC is working. Before CC, CA teachers would just pass everybody and students not ready would jump into Algebra. Now, those students have to be able to pass a test in order to take the class.

Keep in mind that the graph shows percentage taking the class, which is dropping because CA educated students can't just be funneled through the system like they were pre-CC.
