One morning in late January, Jake picked up the box on his desk, tore through the packing tape, unearthed the iPhone case inside, snapped a picture, and uploaded it to an Amazon review he’d been writing. The review included a sentence about the case’s sleek design and cool, clear volume buttons. He finished off the blurb with a glowing title (“The perfect case!!”) and rated the product a perfect five stars. Click. Submitted.

Jake never tried the case. He doesn’t even have an iPhone.

Jake then copied the link to his review and pasted it into an invite-only Slack channel for paid Amazon reviewers. A day later, he received a notification from PayPal, alerting him to a new credit in his account: a $10 refund for the phone case he’ll never use, along with $3 for his trouble — potentially more, if he can resell the iPhone case.

Amazon reviews are almost worthless. Half the reviewers don't understand the point or are being compensated. I once saw someone give a product 1 star because someone stole the package off her porch.

I dismiss any review that is too positive or negative.

Pakistani guy I worked with gave me a free flashlight if I wrote a good review for it.

Never did the review but it's a great flashlight.

I don't really care about the fake reviews. They're fairly easy to spot.

I hate Amazon for another reason. Let's say I'm looking for Bluetooth headphones. 10,000 results show up and they're mostly weird arse brands you've never heard of like Mamamiya,GEJIN, Pandawill, Losei, Senso, Taotronics, etc. 90% of these look like the same exact product too.

You really have to dig for Sony, JBL, Bose, JVC, Plantronics, Harmon Kandon, Pioneer etc. It's like this for almost every single item I search for. It's a real chore to find reputable brands under a search. I find myself going to Best Buy, Fry's, WalMart more and more

A lawyer wrote a book and wanted me to give him a fake Amazon review. I declined.

I see this sentiment a lot, but I haven’t really had issues. I buy a lot of clothing/shoes/etc and usually the reviews have tons of photos.

...or you just filter for the brands you want to see on the left side of the screen.

I may or may not give away saints tickets in contests to get reviews. It's hard to get good reviews. Most people only review bad experiences.

I see it often. I'm looking for a review of the product, not the USPS. I'm already aware they are sometimes late or lose packages.

Yup, you'll see people that buy the wrong things, and then give a bad review because they ordered the wrong thing.

The questions I see on Amazon are some of the dumbest questions I've seen in my life. Someone will be looking for a refrigerator water filter, and ask "Will this work in a 98 Accord 4cyl?"

I thought Amazon stopped that practice because of criticism over a year ago.

Nope. They say they are against it, but do little to nothing to combat it. They've gone after a few companies, but that's it.

Products can still get 700 reviews in the first day, and Amazon DGAF

My favorite Amazon reviews of all time were for Hilary Clinton’s book. People on there were brutal.
