You’re right but I’ll make an exception, didn’t make that up, wish I could search the local news archives, I saw it, and it was laughable
ETA: will stipulate that the local station may have misused the term deployment for weekend drill, but deployment was the buzzword for the story
Not sure why you’re laughing at National Guard guys for Desert Storm. Like I said above, I was there (active duty army) and I remember specifically it was a national guard MLRS artillery unit that laid down support fire for us during the ground war. They didn’t just “shovel shite in Louisiana” as you seem to think. They were right there with the rest of us.

Have never heard much positive about McCain but at least he refused to leave his fellow prisoners when offered release because of his old man, and he had a rep of being less than loyal

Subtle "I'm in BLM and kneel for the anthem" brag by OP.

Thanks, very familiar with Polk, and the gulf wars though

Our unit was deployed to Afghanistan in 03, and we spent a year in Afghanistan.

Ive been to both the gulf and to Ft. Polk. And if I had to go back to one, I’d go back to the Gulf before I went back to Ft. fricking Polk. I’d call if a shithole but that would be an insult to shitholes.

During the first gulf war I was watching the news and the story was about an army guard unit in Shreveport about to get deployed, they had the cameras out while they were loading up, families there all boudeting , very touching scene, turns out they were being “deployed” to Ft. Polk for the weekend
My LANG unit deployed to Afghanistan in ‘02 after a one month stop at fort Polk for a crash course in combat readiness. And to address the OP, we didn’t hop a plane straight from the airport to an undeveloped base in Afghanistan. I’m not sure how it’s done now, but back then no one when into the Middle East without first passing through Germany for in-processing.
I’ve never heard anyone refer to an active duty assignment in Europe as a deployment. That’s not what “deployment” is and that’s not what guardsmen are used for. Those locations are already staffed by active duty personnel who are “stationed” there.

Agree worked there one summer as a kid, during the vn war, joint was a jumping, heard a lot of comments with the sentiment of “ just send us to Nam already”

Met a guy in a 610 shop that had a freaking bronze star for combat valor.
Remember the Camp Bastion flightline got overrun by 14 Taliban members dressed in US Army uniforms in 2010? They killed the CO of one of the squadrons and a maintainer who was a 620 Marine, crazy.

So this PA NG unit that I was referencing would've been, if I remember correctly, west or southwest of Baghdad in roughly 2005 or 2006, so not the First Gulf War.
Sorry, I was referring to the Penn NG in 1991, in Kohbar Towers, Daharan, Saudi Arabia. (I'm pretty sure it was Penn NG)

Not laughing at the guard Darth, pretty familiar with that too, was laughing at the story, a guard unit was going away for the weekend and because the gulf war had begun, the local news was playing it up like they were going to war, and with all of the families out there treating it as such just struck me as funny, I’d already been in the area a couple of times by then

I'm not sure if OP has a family or not, but the hard part of a deployment is not where you go, it's that you have to leave your family behind. Some locations are certainly more austere than others, but being away from your kids for a year is a motherfricker.
Agreed. Also, to comment on the OP, just because they're Reserve or NG doesn't mean they're not going in the shite. Two of my best friends were in the Reserve and the NG. Between the two of them, they had 3 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan.

They probably were going to war. That’s the only reason a guard unit would be going to Fort Polk.
