SO doesn't want a big wedding. She wants a party. Which is 100% fine by me.

Just be careful. Our good friends did a destination wedding (supposed to be small) with a party for everyone else to follow at home.

Close friends and family wedding became 80 people in the Caribbean and the party basically became a 200 person wedding reception. Weddings of all types are money pits.

This is why I had a simple destination wedding.

Why in the hell wpuld you want to go to a wedding. If I didn't get an invite I would look at it as a good thing.

Go get married at the courthouse. Save your $$ for a nice honeymoon or to buy a house.

And I spend all this time trying to come up with reasons to not have to go to weddings.

Learn to say no to people. You are getting married, become an adult and tell people you don’t want there the truth.

I'm telling you, 175/180 isn't that crazy for some of these venues. I just pulled up two fairly popular ones here (one medium-high end and one very high end). One is 235/pp and one STARTS at 375/pp.

You're either getting robbed or you're conflating the venue's total cost with the food cost.

We had a very large wedding for which my in-laws spared no expense and the food cost was no where near that.

Don’t go around talking about your wedding to people and not expect them to at the least feign interest in going...

This was true 10 years ago. But in the era of social media, you don't even have to mention your engagement/wedding around people for them to know about it. All it takes is for one person in the office to see a post on FB, and then they end up telling everyone else.

People definitely invited themselves to our wedding. We have this photo in our house and look at that fricking fat kid, I have no idea who that is, dressed like he's going to Chuck e Cheese.

ETA: The photo got jacked up in Katrina, but that's all part of the story.

It's kind of irrelevant for what I'm talking about. Most places in that range that require in house catering aren't segregating out a pure food cost anyway. But if you're gauging receptions that are 250 or 350 or more per person (which will really just be venue+food+alcohol+service), the food and booze costs are going to be in that range I'm talking about. Just look at the upgrade options for food and alcohol.

The first post was about costs per head for food. You're talking about the total cost per head it seems.

Those places charge what they want because you have no other option. It's a clown show, like most costs in the wedding.

Ours was in the $300-350 range with everything included, except alcohol which we got for free. Our food was lower than your range, but we had an outside caterer.

We put “adult reception following ceremony” in really fine print at the bottom of the invite to avoid people from bringing their kids.
