Slavery is just a crutch nowadays. Its historical significance to this country pales in importance to other historical subjects...the the founding and the circumstances surrounding the formation of the government we have today...which was so beautifully crafted that it very much led to the end of slavery.

If I had to make a bet, the founding probably gets a tenth or less of the time slavery gets in classrooms

The teachers and school are stupid for even doing this.

It seems like common goddam sense that segregating kids - particularly to make black kids play the part of slaves - is a terrible idea that should never, ever be attempted

I know what you mean in this climate, but no one would go see a reenactment with a bunch or white and Asian slaves, for example.

Maybe it's best to gloss over the harsh reality of the Underground Railroad, but you could argue that's even more disrespectful.

We obviously don't have enough information here and are simply relying on the outrage of a mother that, from what it sounds like, wasn't even there. I find it a bit odd that one student, out of all those kids, is complaining about an event that apparently takes place every year.

Kinda the point I was trying to make in the OP.

and, if they had used white kids as slaves they would have gotten the Hunchback of Notre Dame treatment.

If done correctly, this would be as powerful a message one could send about this event.

On the other hand, you would have to include Gypsies, Slavs and other "Untermensch" because that's what the Nazis did.

But, high schoolers are probably better equipped to handle this than elementary/middleschoolers - just IMHO.

I think we all agree that this would have been a great teaching moment for 11th grade American History Students.

Just not 10-12 yr old children who aren't developed enough to NOT be traumatized in situations like that. A 16 yr old would process that "WOW IT REALLY SUCKED FOR THESE PEOPLE" while knowing he/shes not really in harms way.

I don't want my fricking 7th grade son playing an overseer in a reenactment.

Were there "overseers" in this? We're missing some pretty big details about this excursion.

Can’t wait for my kindergartener’s class play. It’s titled “Storming the beach”. He got the lead role and plays the first guy to jump off one of the boats. So exciting.
My 7 year old daughter also got the lead role in a new play called “Cigars & Oval Offices”. So happy our schools have taken the initiative to teach our kids about our country’s great history

This is short sighted. Use the Jewish kids as the financers of the slave trade.

Can guarantee you that while on a 4 day field trip, some class clown smarty pants invariably decides it would be a great idea to ad lib the re-enactment by pulling off his belt and whipping his property - an assuming black kid - for choosing to haul butt instead of picking cotton.

If this event has been going on for years without complaint at a majority black school, I highly doubt that it is truly a traumatizing reenactment.

So, if the same black students go to an African American museum where slavery and civil rights is shown, would they get traumatized there also?

Or is it just cause white folks cane up with the program?

I'm also curious as to how many black teachers are involved with this and how many black administrators helped organize this.

Yeaaa I'm a go with poor judgment on using 6th graders to reenact a really fricked up era in our country's history.

Next up chirren! All the Jewish kids are ushered into the locker room showers and lights shut off... ya know to reenact the Holocaust.

Taking Kids to see a staged reenactment would be just fine. We went to see a Civil War battle and Plantation Life on field trips to Port Hudson and Magnolia Mound respectively.

I have to agree with this.

It was a pretty fricked up time and having kids her age in the reenactment, I can see how a 6th grader would get traumatized by that shite.

If it was a movie, it would probably be rated R because of the content.

When I was in High School, I remember a history class showing "Roots" and some of the black kids were pissed seeing it. They talked about it. Saying that the fact that if they were born during that time, that would be their life.

Don't get me wrong, I am not one who buys into that whole white privilege bullshite, but I can see how watching that can piss people, who can easily relate, off.

I think that some of you need a lesson on the Underground Railroad. We're not talking about a reenactment that would likely involve whippings, beatings, and the negative things that could be traumatic. Much more likely that slaves escaping to freedom is the theme. Pretty positive and exciting, if done correctly.

If you're suggesting that whites should be included as slaves in the reenactment, then you're just like the ones who are complaining. You don't want history taught, you want diversity taught. Historically, whites weren't escaping via the Underground Railroad.
