Underground Railroad reenactment leaves sixth grade student TRAUMATIZED

As a 7th grade history teacher, this is something that makes me look very forward to retirement. Luckily, I teach in a fairly conservative area, but this stuff leaks in. You now have to be very, very careful about the language you use in teaching. I can envision not even being able to use the work "slavery" within the next few years. This teacher presented a realistic lesson that parents knew about beforehand, and now the school is talking about ending it because one parent complained.

Yeaaa I'm a go with poor judgment on using 6th graders to reenact a really fricked up era in our country's history.
Next up chirren! All the Jewish kids are ushered into the locker room showers and lights shut off... ya know to reenact the Holocaust.
Taking Kids to see a staged reenactment would be just fine. We went to see a Civil War battle and Plantation Life on field trips to Port Hudson and Magnolia Mound respectively.

It seems like common goddam sense that segregating kids - particularly to make black kids play the part of slaves - is a terrible idea that should never, ever be attempted.

For starters, what do the demographics of this school look like? I googled the town and found this...
In South Holland 19.46% of the population is Caucasian. In South Holland 77.52% of the population is African American. In South Holland 0.45% of the population is Asian.
So let's surmise what probably actually happened here. Based on the town's demographics, In a class of 30 students, you'll have roughly 23 black kids, 6 white kids, and half an asian kid.
So I'm guessing like 4 of the 6 white kids ended up being non-slaves, meaning only 2 white kids were slaves. Throw in a little bit of sixth-grader immaturity and hyperbole, and boom, "all the slaves were black kids."
But yes, a teacher needs to have more wits about them so that this issue shouldn't have even arose.
