I haven’t posted on here in a while, trying to enjoy the team’s playoff push. It’s kind of a buzzkill on here, as many could care less about the playoffs, preferring to lose and fire Gentry and/or Dell. It reminds me of a dog who never stops chasing it’s tail, round and round they go to nowhere. The team is playing an entertaining style (Jrue and AD are thriving) while exceeding expectations (in spite of Boogie’s injury). None of that seems important to this fan-base, as it seems many need convincing why they should even like the team. Very odd.
Dell and Gentry have done solid jobs this year. Everyone seems to play well for Gentry, even though they could have quit on him after Boogie’s injury. It has taken Dell a while to assemble a winning roster, but all the team needs is a quality SF to be a legit contender. It wouldn’t make sense to fire either at this point. When you’re moving in the right direction, you build on that, not scrap the plan and start over.
Take some notes from the Nuggets and Clippers, they know how to support a team; the Pels will make the playoffs over both of them, in spite of their non-supportive fan-base.

First thing first
Unfortunately, I agree with the rest of the post. This board has been lacking. I'm in no way a major contributor on any board here, but I haven't felt inclined to post in here either. If we make the playoffs, we'll see an influx of people here and we'll all wish they had stayed on the Rant.

Dell is a good GM, he just made mistakes trying to build a winner over night and that led to some mistakes. He's made good moves minus the Asik contract and getting rid of Lopez to sign Tyreke.
It's taken awhile for things to come together.

I still don't like Gentry, Dell has made some dumb moves in the past but i think he's done a decent job and have no problem retaining him. Yeah we haven't had a good SF in quite some time, but it's not like people are knocking down doors to come here. we had to overpay for Solo to come here. He's found many good contributors for cheap.
The coaching staff has done a great job this year for the most part, especially having to adapt mid way through the year in a major way.
What i most look forward to is how they adjust in a 7 game series. that is where coaches earn their money.

If that SF's name doesn't start with LeBron, they're not a legit contender.

There are a handful of small forwards who would instantly make this team a contender. You’d probably have to gut the bench for them, though.
For this first time in seemingly forever, you could have a really solid bench unit if you bring back Ian Clark, Etwuan, Niko, Diallo, whoever. Especially if you could effectively stagger AD, DMC, and Jrue.

I strongly disagree with this statement. Durant, Kawhi, George, Hayward, Butler, and The Greek Freak all make the Pels a legit contender also. You can't tell me a team with Rondo/Jrue/George/AD/Cousins isn't a contending team.

Robert Covington would make them a contending team.

I like Covington, he would be a great fit, so would Middleton. People don't seem to like Harrison Barnes, but he would be a huge upgrade.

All three of those guys would make us contenders.
Would be awesome if niko/Ajinca and a pick could land us a legit SF.

He has made as many dumb moves as he has good moves. Unfortunately, his dumb moves have painted us into a corner with the roster. We have no way to upgrade outside of trading first round picks for expensive vets. The cap situation is spiraling.

We’re in a hell of a lot better position today than we were two years ago. We had zero traceable assets then. Now we have some reasonably attractive offers we can out together, should the right player come available.

And resigning Boogie takes all flexibility away. Other teams know that and it weakens our bargaining power. Aside from falling arse-backwards into 2 separate superstars, nothing Dell has done had been a major positive needle-mover.

I don’t see how that’s necessarily the case. They’d have movable assets (including Boogie) if that situation presented itself.

He's average, at best.
For every good move (Buddy+1st for Cousins), there's an equally dumb move (1st for Asik, then 5/50mil or whatever).
Assuming this is our relative 2018 roster:
PG: Rondo/Jackson
SG: Holiday/Moore
SF: Hill/Miller
PF: Davis/Mirotic/Diallo
C: Cousins/Ajinca/Okafor
His ability to find out of: Moore, Hill, Mirotic for an upgrade is going to decide his fate.
In a perfect world, Mirotic+Hill for Barnes.
Then Moore+Ajinca+1st for Kemba.
PG: Kemba/Rondo/Jackson
SG: Holiday/Jackson
SF: Barnes/Miller
PF: Davis/Diallo
C: Cousins/Diallo

Might as well go after LeBron if we are talking impossibilities.

I'll say this, Dell gets some lucky arse trades in.
I was being sarcastic obviously, but the only true assets he have that are trade-able are those 3 and the future picks. He's gonna make a move, it better pan out

Niko and Ajinca will be 17.5 mill expiring. Add Miller's 2.1 mill, the team will have 19.6 mill in expiring contracts and their 2019 first round pick. 1st round picks and expiring contracts are very valuable trade chips, the Pels are in good shape in both of those categories.

You really like making mountains out of mole hills. There is indeed a recent thread where someone ponders if the team would be better off missing the playoffs to get rid of Gentry. Most people have chosen to ignore such a silly thread and the vast majority of people that did participate in it told the OP they didn't agree with him. Exactly 2 people chimed in as "could care less about the playoffs", not "many". But that doesn't matter to you because for some reason you think that if you shame the small group of hardcore fans on this board hard enough that thousands of casual fans will just magically start going to games more often.
While I do think we have the power to impact the topic of the day among Pelicans fans by being one of the few viable Pels message boards, we don't have the power to pack the SKC. So please stop attacking us thinking you're getting closer to your goal, you aren't, you're just pissing off your fellow hardcore fans for no good reason.

I'd clean house for a potential top 5 coach but I don't think any other level of replacement will do as well as this staff has done. For everything that Gentry lacks, one of his bigger attributes when he was hired was that he will listen to and work with his staff, and I think they've assembled a strong staff to support him. When I look at what the Pels need to do to improve, X's and O's and even game management is usually pretty far down the list of problems.
To me the roster is where the opportunity for improvement lies, not the coaching and schemes. Whoever the GM is will have their options pretty limited unless/until you are ready to blow up the AD/DC era and start over.

I think they need another starting caliber guard too. Maybe the right SF minimizes that need, but Rondo has too many holes in his game to be the every night solution at PG, and Jrue plays better when he has at least some creation and ball handling help.
Things can change quickly in the NBA, at this point last year I don't think anyone expected Kyrie Irving to be traded during the summer. So I think the team should hold out waiting for a disgruntled star to be available. If there isn't a disgruntled star though, not many playoff teams would be willing to trade a starting caliber player on a reasonable contract for future assets and not many bad teams have reasonably paid starters that are available.
With the assets the Pels have a player like Fournier seems to be one of the few available options. I don't think Dragic will be available as the Heat paid a lot to be a mediocre also ran playoff team which they need Dragic for. Philly is interesting because they have a lot of players that play the same position. Could you get a Covington or Saric for some package of Ajinca/Niko/Moore and a pick? Maybe get a 3rd team involved to take one or both of Niko/Moore and send a 2nd pick to Philly?
