What’s the reasoning/explanation behind guys like Chris Davis batting leadoff? I can’t seem to figure this one out...

I do this with my son in the 6u league. Need the best bats when you get to top of the order in the bottom 5th

It gives your best hitter more at-bats.

High OBP, better hitters getting more ABs. Although, Chris Davis has never been a high OBP guy.

My son is the best hitter on his little league team. His coach has him lead off.

I’ve always questioned the stereotypes of leadoff batters. They only bat leadoff once in a game then they become just another hitter in the lineup.
Showalter’s reasoning is to force the pitcher to pitch to him. Try to reduce opportunities to pitch around him.

Makes the opposing team pitch to him.

Putting him anywhere else in the lineup and there is no once a game guarantee.

Getting the best batter the most opportunities to bat.

quote:Sure but you usually have lesser players batting 7 through 9, so why would you want your best hitter coming up with basically the worst possible chance of having more guys on base?

I always thought Bonds should have batted lead off

More ABs?
I still think 3rd is the best spot for your best hitter

Not sure that makes up for all the extra ABs he'll get with more guys on base batting behind 2 high OBP guys compared to batting leadoff his 1st AB then behind the worst hitters in the lineup each AB after.

quote:the 2nd and 3rd spot is reserved for this because its been shown that those are the two spots that get more ABs than anyone else. the lead off spot is for people who get on base to set the table for your #2 and 3 hitter. dont know why chris davis is hitting lead off though cause when i think high OBP guys, he aint who i think of

He was probably intentionally walked 173 times that same year.

oh sick, good to know. how does your son's LL coach feel about bunting? how much does he value defense? when does he bring his closer in?
