Self-Defense Ammo Expansion & Penetration Tests

Ammo To Go has published the results of a pretty large batch of terminal ballistics testing, done with a pretty wide range of SD ammo.
The test involved 4 layers of clothing placed in front of blocks of 10% ballistics gel.
The interesting thing is that they used handguns with relatively short barrels -- 9mm Shield, Ruger LCP, M&P 40c and Ruger SR45. With the exception of the SR45 (4.5" barrel), all of the others had barrel lengths of 3.5" or shorter.
These tests don't perfectly replicate the FBI's test protocol (shorter barrels and different mix of clothing) but it looks to be an interesting, valid comparison.

Before clicking, best performers are:
180 grain 10mm
185 grain .45
115 grain 9mm
In that order. The 240s, 220s, and 147s are meh.

Actually the 147 gr HST rounds did pretty well. They didn't test a lot of 115 gr but they tended to either not penetrate enough or not expand and then over-penetrate. However the Black Hills 115 gr +P did really well.

How is this much diffferent that’s the tests completed by lucky gunner?
Which test is better?
Sorry I’m truck so I can’t study like I want to but I am fascinated by bullet ballistics I’m oistols and I love the lucky gunner test

Honestly after looking at it the lucky gunner one is much better. If not for its filtering options buts pictures that go along woh it. M

Used to get into stuff like this.
But the truth is, a person may survive multiple 9mm wounds, while the next is DRT (dead right there) from a single 22. The amount of variables is endless.
Pick a sealed primer hollow point of your choosing and practice, practice, practice.

I just hate how they never include a 125gr sjhp full power 357 magnum in these tests for reference.
Im still not convinced a bonded bullet is the answer. A cup n core hollow point hauling arse was the answer for a long time.

I've always thought heavy-for-caliber was the better overall choice for SD ammo. There are so many variables and "stopping power" being the myth that it is, I feel better sending more mass than less.

Excellent point.

Its damn near impossible to find any comparable tests from a reputable source. I dont understand why.
I was clicking around while shopping for my most recent purchase and was reading about 357 sig vs mag. An ex cop said he shot a perp in the chest with a full size 357 mag with old school 125gr sjhp. He said there were pieces of copper and bad guy and shite several feet behind where the guy was standing. Bad guy was DRT. Most of the bullet didnt exit but it went all over the place. Piss poor performance by most modern standards but the results say otherwise.
What im getting at is im still skeptical that 100% weight retention is the answer. Id like to see some old school stuff vetted out to the extent that the new stuff is.
