We rent a car, drive to Puerto Aventuras or Tulum, get an amazing condo, eat local food, show ourselves around without a tour guide.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but do you look more like a local or an out of towner? Seems like it would make a difference.

We're white if that's what you're getting at. Tourism is their livelihood, if anything we're safer for obviously not being from there.

I’ve driven the Cancun to a Tulum road and on to Coba. No problems during the day. Stopped at night by the gendarmes before. That got scary AF, fast.
My advice, leave Cancun for Tulum/Coba early and get back before late afternoon.

quote:well , there's your problem! I work in Mexico. Gringos need a Mexican driver, period.
the family flew into Cancun and rented a car to drive to Tulum.
quote:allegedly. Who knows who sent that text. Gringo driving down lonely Mexican road at night, what could possibly go wrong.
"On Wednesday at 7 p.m., Amy sent a text to our mom that said, 'We made it to our condo,'"
They were stopped and robbed.

The Yucatán is extremely nice and safe. Especially Tulum. Not saying bad things can’t happen but Tulum is to Juarez as Beverly Hills is to Compton. I think Mexico has likely abandoned all hope for the rest of the country to focus on keeping this one area safe.
I believe a gas leak or some building issue like that before any violent attack. Mexico isn’t known for its strict adherence to building code and many structures are left unfinished to avoid paying taxes, is what I heard.
It bears repeated, Tulum and the Yucatán are amazingly beautiful. Would go back in a heartbeat.

I’m in Mexico - usually Juarez - more months than not. I’m white AF and speak high school Spanish. And it’s fine.
Dumb southern people have this weird obsession with making Mexico out to be something it isn’t. Very weird.
Carry on.

sheesh, lot of Mexican hate pent up in the first two pages of the thread. Mexico undoudbtely has its shithole locations, but these people probably vacationed where hundreds of Americans do daily year round, but corrupt Mexican police are covering up a murdered family and put them back in their condo all nice and neat? Lol ok

Went to Puerto Vallarta last year, going again this year. Staying here:
21 restaurants on site, world class spa, and three designer golf courses, great beaches and a Cirque du Soleil theme park and theater being added. Not your run of the mill resort. I will feel just fine being there.

This is true. Almost every Airbnb place I've stayed at in Mexico didn't have a smoke/carbon monoxide detector.

This plus a family of 4 with no obvious signs of foul play...big BS. Mexican authorities are clearly full of shite here. I'm guessing they were robbed and murdered and the police are just delaying.
Police probably did it.

The police there can be bribed so I doubt it.

[quote]Four U.S. cities also made the list, including St. Louis, Mo., Baltimore, Md., New Orleans, La., and Detroit, Mich. They ranked 14, 26, 34 and 36, respectively.

Don't normally see this in St Louis, Baltimore, Detroit or New Orleans but maybe I'm just weird or "mexicophobic".

Just make sure it's not on the gulf coast. The OT makes fun of everything from Gulf Shores to Panama City.
Just drive a little further east to St. George Island. Still the gulf coast. Stay at a beach house in the Plantation, gated island community. Actually has it’s own airstrip if you happen to fly a small plane. We drive in my F-150 sans truck nuts, of course.
