The two blog post they used to pain him as "anti-homosexual and anti-abortion" are really pretty reasonable thoughts.
With regard to homosexuality he specifically says he doesn't think the government should be able to tell people whom they should or shouldn't be able to marry. He merely states that he feels homosexuality is unnatural based upon the fact the male and female bodies are physically designed to couple, not male/male or female/female. He also said he did not think there should be political protection of a sexual practice (i.e. gay sex) because if homosexual sex is protected, then why not bestiality or pedophilia? I don't think either thought is necessarily crazy.
Likewise, with regards to abortion he discusses that instead of categorizing abortion as "preventative medicine" there are other avenues to prevent unwanted pregnancies -- i.e take precautions or just don't have sex if you can't provide for the child.
Obviously what he did is unforgivable and he should rot in hell for needlessly killing/injuring innocent people, but the statements listed are pretty rational thoughts...not the ramblings of a right-wing madman.

It's just weird that the first things the media gets their hands on with this dude are two things he purportedly wrote 6 years ago when he was 16.

The posts are from a few years ago, when he was homeschooled by his mother. Something tells me he probably has a larger digital footprint, which we will find out about.
