Haven't Been Fishing In 25 years

Hi all,
As a kid my dad, brother, and me spent our weekends and summers fishing around the BR area. Bayou Sorrel, Pigeon, Lake Varrett, Grand River, Spanish Lake, to name a few. It was the best father son activity I could have ever hoped for. Out on the water with dad.
As I grew older sports, girls, and other hobbies eventually replaced fishing.
I just turned 51 and with age comes a sense of appreciation for what you've had, and what opportunities and experiences you better not take for granted, they'll soon be gone.
So I called my dad and we're going fishing this weekend. I haven't cast a lure in 25 years. I took my rod down out of the attic and tried a few casts in the front yard. That ABU Ambassadeur 5500 was dry and squeeky as an old wagon wheel. Thanks to Youtube I was able to disassemble, clean and lube the reel and it's working like new again.
And believe it or not, I can still cast pretty damn accurately!
All that's to say I saw that the Army Corps of Engineers opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway last week. What's that going to do to the fishing in that area? High water usually means fish up in the woods where you can't get to them right?
We'll probably be bass fishing, what's the latest lures for bass? Spinner baits? Lunka-Lures? Plastic worms?

I can't give you any advice regarding the spillway opening and lures. I think yall will have a great time regardless. Its been too long since my father and I went fishing together. Best of luck

ETA: on a serious note, the old stuff still works. Spinnerbaits, TX rigged worms and craws, poppers and spooks, etc. don’t over think it and just do what you know.

Texas rigged zoom ultra vibe speed craw's are what I use a lot of the time. I like using white, watermelon seed, sapphire blue, and a junebug color. Throwing weightless Texas rigged senkos always do good for me as well. I normally use spinner baits if it is overcast or cloudy and fish them relatively slow. If they are hitting on top water a hollow body frog or chugbug are my go to's. Rat-l-traps are also always in my tackle box.

Bonnet Carre spillway will affect Lake Pontchartrain not the basin. That would be the Morganza spillway, sorry I can’t help you on freshwater fishing, I’m a coastal guy. Tight lines!!

Bass haven't changed. Don't over think the lure part of it. Get out there and have fun.

As others said, the same lures will catch fish. You don't need the latest advertised this and that to catch. Have fun!

That’s awesome. Welcome back to the game. Not much has changed although there have been a few cool gimmicks.
I see you cleaned your reel and your last post said you put new line on it. May want to tie off to something solid and check your drag against your rod. Sitting in the dry ultra hot summers, conditions may have set in for a bit of rot or material breakdown. both the rod or drag gasket on your reel may have issues not seen on surface.
Set your drag to a stiff pull or whatever you feel is comfortable for the size rod/reel you use. Thread the eyes on your rod and tie off to a door handle or anything solid. Slowly pull tension up on your rod to test the backbone of your rod and your clicking drag tension.
I’d hate for your to do a big hookset on a nice fish only to have your (possibly) dry rotted fishing rod blow up in your face.
Above all, have a great time with your dad. Tell him you love him and thank him for his hard work and sacrifice for your family.

forget about the bonnet carre spillway, its now part of the mississippi river and 20ft deep lol.
if your fishing around laplace you can try 51 canal or probably better to try reserve canal or even go to blind river.

Yeah man, the time with my dad is really what this is about, not how many fish we put on the stringer. He and my Paw Paw are the blue prints I tried to follow in to manhood. Two gotdamn heroes in in my eyes.

Truth right here. I still throw a couple old Bingo lures. They worked then, and they work now.

I bet you'll have a blast. I never got completely out of hunting and fishing, but I definitely cut way way back during my college years. I eventually found my way back and it's my favorite thing to do.
I grew up with my dad using those 5500's. I think he still has a couple. Great reels.
