What's more important: winning or how you play the game?

In the era of participation trophies, which philosophy do you most align with? For argument's sake, let's consider the two to be mutually exclusive, with no overlap between the two.

Its not really a "win" unless you do it by the rules. Otherwise you aren't actually better than the other person.

winning as long as you don't cheat too much

Win with class, lose with dignity.

Well that's stupid.
But in this stupid scenario, its how you play the game.
Unless I'm playing my friends in bar game, then its just winning at all costs.

How can playing the game and winning be mutually exclusive?

Its how you play the game, bc we can't all win.

Then that makes it ridiculously easy: how you play the game.
If you care about winning the game, you should care about the integrity of the game.
If there's no integrity, WTF is the point? What did you "win"?

Win at all cost. No point in playing if you won’t do whatever it takes to win.

If it's 5 year old baseball... it's how you play the game.
If it's MLB... then just win, Baby!

I would rather be a trash talking a-hole and win over a good sport loser.

If you play the game correctly, you will win so I’m going with how you play.

What f winning is defined by who plays the game the best?
Posted on 3/12/18 at 4:10 pm to bigballer1598
This completely depends on the age group.
For young kids it's how you play
For high school and up it's winning

Winning... nobody remembers the effort a loser puts out. Nobody remembers that game from high school when you played hard... they remember that you either won or lost. That's why it is a stat in nearly EVERY competition (soccer with their ties)... winner or loser. That's what you are and that's what makes you.

I've never lost a game of basketball with my friends and said well at least I played the game the right way.

How you play the game would be my answer but there are simply too many variables if they are mutually exclusive.
For example, pickup basketball. I could technically foul so hard when playing that it would knock out the other team's best players and force them to fill in with lesser players.
There is a balance that needs to taken into account that includes both winning and how you play the game.
