Inside Higher Ed Article

quote:

College students value a diverse and inclusive environment more than free speech rights, according to a new study on student attitudes on free expression.

The report from Gallup and the Knight Foundation comes at a turbulent time on college campuses nationwide, where students have challenged the principles of the First Amendment -- they have called for controversial campus speakers to be disinvited, and when they disagree with speakers’ message, have shouted them down. They’ve also called for administrators to invest more in diversity initiatives and are demanding clear statements from them against speech they deem hateful.

But what was most striking to Brandon Busteed, executive director of Gallup’s higher education division, was how much students appeared to be critical of social media, despite its proliferation in their lives.

Roughly 57 percent of students thought that debate on political and social issues took place online rather than in person at their colleges (43 percent).

Despite the popularity of online platforms, though, students reported social media tended to stifle free speech in many ways. About 60 percent of students indicated that too many people block others online with whom they disagree -- this is up 12 percentage points from 2016.

About 59 percent of students said people feared being attacked online for their views, an uptick of 10 percentage points from 2016. And 83 percent of students said that it is too easy for anonymous users to post online.

We'll all be oppressed, but at least there will be a pretty spectrum of colors to look at.

I hate my generation. Wait until 60% of these students graduate and actually start working for private companies. They'll see how idiotic they sound and will begin to lean right.

The other 40% will get jobs at a university and 30% of those will continue their liberal thought processes.

I block liberals and I don’t spout my opinion on Twitter because of liberals. You want to fix everything? Remove liberals.

And this is why we shouldn’t let “students” create policy.

These Universities are by and large incubators of this progressive-commie disease because it can’t survive on its own in the real world.

When has anyone every benefited from diversity, other than the person who got hired because of their skin color? Seriously. What does it do?

I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era

So can we say enough for the "listen to the kids" crap. Listen all you want, but they demonstrate with stuff like this they shouldn't be taken seriously.

They love them some diversity, as long as it's not diversity of thought.

This seems to contradict the earlier finding, and is an indication that when they are no longer students, their outlook will change dramatically.

And this is why the latest Democratic initiative to use high school students to push the agenda for gun control is so laughable. They are students, high school or college, and they don't know shite.

They are in school TO LEARN so that they can then make grown up decisions. They are not valid sounding boards for setting economic or social policy.
