Man, Mira Sorvino looks really different. She's still very attractive but she doesn't resemble the actress from "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and Great Gatsby" at all.

I don't really understand this sentiment, but my favorites from any given year are rarely nominated for Best Picture. I'd say Get Out is an unusual nominee, but do we prefer "usual" nominees like The Post, Darkest Hour, The Theory of Everything, Les Mis, etc?
Also, the Academy expanded the number of nominees for Best Picture after 4 "usual" nominees got chosen over The Dark Knight in 2009. They added more spots so more mainstream fare would get nominated. I'd say Get Out's nomination shows the spirit of the rule change working the way the Academy hoped it would.
