I don't believe 100% in anything other than death.

My humble opinion is that AA is a bandaid that temporarily stops the bleeding.

Rehabilitation sews the wound shut.

What heals the scar is the answer.

That answer is found in far wiser men and women than me.

And i think, AA keeps the stitches from popping loose, opposed to :

Just my opinion. I truly like hearing all viewpoints because i know i dont know squat.

It means that rehabilitation is more productive than AA.

I agree with that, but one cannot be productive in society while in rehab.

AA keeps people like me productive in society while stayong sober.

AA, in my opinion, is a tool.

I cant build a fence with only a hammer. I need a saw, nails, among other things. But the hammer is a vital part of building that fence.

Absolutely agree. Many alcoholics and drug abusers have regular jobs. When I was drinking heavily I had 17 direct reports. I showed up hungover almost every day

Have you ever been a raging alcoholic? Serious question. I'm not shitting on you if not.

No, I've never been a raging alcoholic.

Both my grandfathers died directly from alcohol (one a broken neck from a New Years drunken wreck and one a heart failure from Jax beer).

I've had my own alcohol failures too (DUI charge over fifteen years ago).

I fight heavy drinking often because I like I like the 'not giving a frick' release of alcohol.

I will myself to beat it because my life is too precious to lose right now.

My precious life is the only motivation I need.

I just posted my online AA meeting.

What did that really help?

I have a suggestion, why don't you get a Big Book and read it, if you find yourself in the pages then go to a different meeting than the one you went to, not all meetings are people bitching about their miserable lives. AA is not the only thing that works but it worked for me when nothing else did.

Man, again I never wrote that AA claimed to provided medical help.

You're missing the point - addicts need medical help.

AA cannot and does not provide medical help which is exactly why they do not claim to provide medical help!

You want moral support, go to AA.

You want medical help (along with moral support) go to rehab.

Logical enough?

You can tell by my posts early in the thread that I'm not an AA guy but I attended my first AA meeting after a medically supervised detox and rehab. Rehab or AA is a false choice. Many people do both.

I have a few philosophical differences with AA but it helps a lot of people and I don't see any value in running it down. There's more than one path to sobriety and AA has been that path to a lot of people.

There is hope for you.

My SIL is like that. He stopped drinking 3 years ago. And yes, AA has helped him. He still goes to meeting now and then.

I have had struggles with booze. I was an all or nothing drinker. I went to a few meetings, read the big book but never followed through with it. I know that it has helped a lot of people when nothing else would so I do believe in the program. Is it for me? Probably not. It took my doctor telling me that I was a candy bar or mixed drink away from pancreatitis. That and the birth of my Grandson helped straighten me out.

At my worst point the wife and I would drink 2 fifths of Bacardi per night or 6 bottles of wine when we were "laying off of the hard stuff".

Two fifths for a male and female is a sizeable amount.

Six bottles of wine is...not.

That's an odd comparison.
