Is this real? I don’t even live in LA but this pisses me off for you all. How can they justify that?

Ah. Makes sense.

And, it should therefore only be a small part of the net change.

Ex:

If your net pay increase is 200. It may be 185 now. Or something like that.

What do they mean by "to compensate for changes in federal tax law"? What does that have to do with STATE withholding?

I'm growing to hate LA more and more. I truly need to get out of this state.

I think it means that since LA doesn't tax you on money that the federal government takes as income tax, that there will be more money taxable by the state following a federal cut. Therefore if your federal taxes drop by $2,000, LA can now tax it at its usual state tax rate. Naturally that would require withholdings to increase.

They can't have their state residents with too much money. Might upset the balance of power.

Thanks for the cogent explanation.

While that doesn't seem hugely significant, it's still chickenshit.

It is sorta crappy, but at least you're not taxed on the dollars the Federal govt takes from you.

Yes. Yes, they are.

You may recall New York being all upset over the Trump tax cuts because their state income taxes would go up. Well, guess what? The same thing is going to happen in Louisiana! Probably not as bad as NY, it’s all dependent on the rates.

Not sure why it wasn’t more widely expected. But oh well. I’m expecting we’ll still come away with more money. At worst, it’ll be a wash. But hey, at least Louisiana will have more money to pay troopers overtime.

I have a great idea, let's get rid of the income tax at the state and national levels.

That’s criminal.

Tax bill to benefit Houston in unexpected ways - Houston Chronicle
quote:

The next major boost for Houston's economy comes compliments of the recently passed tax bill, says Regina Mayor, who leads consulting giant KPMG's global and U.S. energy practice.

It's going to have a positive impact. You'll see money being repatriated. Companies that had pursued inversion strategies in the past are actively looking at how to pull many of their activities back to Houston. We'll see many jobs returning. We'll see people having more free cash as their taxes go down. I think we'll see companies being more generous with bonuses and increases, to share some of the benefits with employees.

It won't come close to being a wash. At worst it'll be 6% of your federal savings. NY state was pissed for other reasons, namely that it's people could no longer deduct their full state income tax liability from their federal taxes.

Why in the hell would anyone pay a state income tax to live in Louisiana? Seriously.

It's a statistical quirk.

The State of La. gives a taxpayer a deduction depending on how much you pay in federal income tax.

Consequently a taxpayer making the same amount of money will pay slightly more in La. Income tax if he sees a federal tax cut.

It's been discussed before and it will help balance the La. Budget.
