I agree.

Why would you put one in space?

When they test rockets they usually use a payload of concrete. Musk thought, rightly so, that it would be cooler to put a car in space and livestream it. I loved the "Don't Panic" message on the console. I mean that last picture OP used is basically a kick arse ad if they wanted.

Can someone help me understand the latter stages of what happened?

Core detached, the fairings come off, and the roadster is attached to something to enable the last burn, right? So what's the terminology for whatever that is and is it still attached at this point?

It's okay to hate Widespread Panic. The Grateful Dead might've been a better analogy.

I think this is why people hate on the Musk fanboys. The guy needed simple weight to simulate a payload so he threw a car in there and everyone starts sucking his cock and calling him a genius. A bunch of steel plates would've served the same purpose. You nerds bring the hate on yourselves because of your starry-eyed nonsense.

Basically, the payload area sits atop the main rocket. It detaches and has a booster that can fire to put it into orbit.

The roadster is attached to the top of the second stage of the rocket. The boosters and core come back down, the second stage continues on and puts the payload into orbit and then typically onto a transfer trajectory to get the payload where it's headed. At that point, the payload usually separates from the second stage of the rocket and then performs any additional burns under its own power while the second stage drifts off, spent.

In this case, there was no separation of the roadster from the second stage and after the transfer burn to its current orbit, they just stayed attached and will drift together.

You sure? I thought they did separate after the booster burn?

Thanks to you both

So at this point the roadster is attached to the second stage, which is now spent of fuel I assume and out of any communication capability, and will merely drift in whatever orbit it has made it to?

The car is just cool and genius marketing.

Nobody is only focusing on the car.

Yes (not sure if still attached but in either case they are going to the same place), and once the battery dies which it may already have that's it. The systems were tested which was the point of it all, the car doesn't have any sensors or anything like that (it's not an actual probe).
