Question about ATV tires....Kenda or ITP

I have a 2004 Honda Rancher 400. At some point I need to replace the tires. My question revolves around tire width. The stock tires on front are 24" 8 x 12 and rear is 24" 10 x 11. I am going to put 25" tires all around. My question is, would it harm the drivetrain if I put 10 inch wide tires on front? Since I am going up a size in height of tire, can I put a wider tire on the front without doing potential damage to engine and transmission? I have read that larger tires can put strain on a machine, if it was originally engineered for smaller tires. The tires that I am considering are ITP Mud Lites. I have read they are a lighter tire, so that should help too right?
I am not planning to be a daredevil and run the machine "all out" through neck deep mud. Just up and down muddy roads and trails in Woodville at the deer camp. I am considering putting a wider tire in the front for extra traction. There seems to be enough room for a wider tire in front, should be no rubbing on anything, shocks, fender brace, etc.

Edit....never pulled the trigger on tires back in January. Looking again and trying to decide between Kenda K299 and ITP Mud Lites. Any experience or opinions about these two brands?

you can more than likely fit 10" wide tires up front but they may require spacers so they don't rub. I can guarantee they will stick out beyond the front fenders and cover the bike in mud. I had 25" ITP mud lites on my 450 foreman and i liked them. 8"'s in the front and 10's in the rear if i remember correctly.

You'll be fine, it's when you start using much bigger tires with a ton more weight and grip that you'd have issues, but going to a 25" mudlite won't hurt.

Thanks. Was also looking at Kenda Bear Claws. Any difference in your opinion. I wouldn't think so, but just curious from those who may have experience with either tire.

I have a 2006 Rancher.
Front tires were getting a little worn.
My brother had a new bike with aftermarket rims and tires.
He asked me if I wanted his front tires for my bike.
I don't remember the exact size but they were only slightly bigger so I swapped them.
They do rub on my fender when I turn all the way to 1 side but it isn't bad... just a slight rub.

If you plan on running in any federal game reserves look up the information in their hunting pamphlets most have a tire size, lug size, and psi requirement.

this is a helpful thread, thanks all. I have a 2007 Honda Rancher 420 and need new tires.... got some $ for Christmas to buy some but I havent gotten around to it.
Where is the best place to shop? I am ok with replacing with stock tires.....any chance the dealerships will sell their stock sets a cheaper price off the bikes they customize out the door? I got a really good deal on replacing my Polaris Ranger tires in this manner....... Just a thought!

Online....Rocky Mountain ATV seems to have really good prices and free shipping. I just need to find someone local in BR to mount new tires on rims. Any suggestions from anyone here in Baton Rouge?

I would like to know the same.
I planned to call Friendly Honda (where I bought my bike and have it serviced) to inquire about the stock tires/rims they remove during customization. Will ask about them replacing tires bought elsewhere.... and respond in this thread.

Don't worry about it... I have a 1996 Honda 300 that still has the stock tires on it.
......They probably each have a gallon of fix a flat in them at this point and more plugs than a beauty shop in the hood but they are still rolling!

Go on Facebook and search atv tires and parts swap shop. A lot of guys there sell tires, some brand new after getting different wheel/tire combos. You can find tires with wheels for what you would pay for tires from a dealership.

Sams and Walmart sell ATV tires, so they should to mount tires (brought to them) for a fee right?

I have Mud Lites on my Rhino, and they've been great. No experience with Kenda.

Not to discourage you from those tires, because both seem very good, but to me it sounds like you’re contemplating purchasing an elite tire and wanting to make the right choice.
Hands down the best ATV tire I’ve ever seen or used is the Essex Surefoot. They are sidewall reinforced 6ply tires with Kevlar belted runflat puncture protection. Because they are Kevlar runflat tires they run with very little psi. They are mud tires that can go through cactus and then a huge mud hole with nails in every tire and they won’t fail, they won’t go flat. The only way I’ve ever seen one fail is if it got hit so hard it came off the rim. They are so sturdy that the tire shop that puts them on will probably have a hard time getting them on the rim. I have them on all our ATVs and they last an extremely long time.
Only downside is they are more expensive. But if you want elite, this is the tire all of us in South Texas use (where you can hit cactus and a 4 ft deep mud hole within 10 feet of each other).

I had kenda bear claws on a bike back in high school. They were pretty terrible IMO. Mudlite is a better tire
