Maybe it's just me being prior military But I think it's just being respectful if you know they have a doctorate. Some people are just disrespectful as frick and have no sense of humility. I blame it on their upbringing.

Huh? A PhD Is a Doctorate.

My daughter had a science teacher in 9th grade who had a PhD. Daughter always referred to her as “Dr. So-and-so”. I have no idea if she required it of the students or if they just got in he habit of calling her Dr.

What he is trying to say is that in American academic higherachy, a PhD is typically the highest degree one can earn in their field. It is even higher than MD, DO, JD, etc. However, professional doctorates come with other rights and privileges that a PHD isn’t typically qualified for.

This is why Kerry Sauley is the best
First day of class: "Don't call me Dr. Sauley. I believe that doctor should be reserved for medical doctors. And while you're at it, don't call me Mr. Sauley, that's my dad. Just go ahead and call me Kerry.

Who the frick emails their teachers? Bunch of suck-asses.
I do find that MD doctors don’t give a shite. The less prestigious the “doctor”, the more they insist on being called doctor for the most part. Except doctorates of physical therapy, pharm D’s, other medical folks. They know not to make people call them doctors.

It is not just you, a lot of people in society today have no concept of respect, or courtesy. One of my friends of almost 50 years is a Dentist when we are hanging out I call him by has first name, the moment I set foot in his office I refer to him as Dr. ---. same calling his office, even though his people know me and know were are close friends I ask for Dr.---. It is just simple courtesy.

I work in a company of 13 people, 6 who have PhDs in geophysics, 1 in ME, and literally zero want to be called doctor.

That’s pretty typical for PhDs outside of academia. It has a lot to do with no one else using titles in the workplace except for maybe the boss.

Just call them by their first name.
Problem solved

That's because in an academic setting it's proper and respectful to refer to them as such. They've earned it.
If you're socializing with a professor and they insist on it, that's over the line.

Faculty members with a Ph.D. have doctorates and have earned the title of doctor. And there are some faculty members who expect students to address them as doctor. If one wants to show respect to faculty members who have a doctorate, calling them "doctor" is appropriate. If one is just meeting a professor, the safest and most respectful thing to do is to refer to him or her as "doctor." Many professors do this not because they are insecure--though there are no doubt some insecure faculty members who demand the use of the title "doctor"--but rather because they are trying to maintain a sense of professionalism in their interaction with students.
With that said, I am not big on the use of titles. I tell my students on the first day that they may refer to me by my first name, if they are comfortable in doing so. About half do, and the other half insists on referring to me as "doctor" regardless of what I tell them they can call me.

One of my most respected mentors who was a prof. Lectured me if I called him Dr or introduced him that way. He would always ask you to call him by his first name. He had multiple PhD,s and spoke 8 languages. Genius smart but the most humble man, I knew

My MIDDLE SCHOOL French teacher had a PhD and she would get pissed if anyone referred to her as Mrs or Ms.

Have any asked if they can call you Mr White?

That's probably because the self-loathing count was pissed off that her Ph.D in French couldn't afford her better than a middle school teaching position.

I had a boss at LSU that wanted me to call him Mr. Terry. I had called him by his first name. My solution was I didn’t call him by his name or Mr. either one. I made a game of it. Made it the whole semester without saying Mister.

It doesn't bother me if a student doesn't call me Dr. xxxxx, but I hate being called Mr. xxxxx.

Unless they insist otherwise, you should address them as Dr.
