I work in a mid-sized plant in BR as a chemist. Most of my colleagues in my group have Ph.D's, but I am a bit of a black sheep with a B.S. degree. It's no big deal, most everyone is cool, but a few who are douche bags about it.

On with the story.. Years ago, there was this one uppity count who really got his panties in a wad if you didn't refer to him as "Doctor Douche" instead of just calling him Douche like a normal fricking person does in ordinary conversation. Well, the operators in the control room of one of the catalyst manufacturing units got wind of this, and one day there was a commercial production of some product Dr. Douche had been assigned to, so he comes around for a visit to see how the process was coming along. It wasn't long before one of the operators asked him, "Oh Hey! Douche, you're like a doctor, right!?" To which Dr. Douche Bag elatedly replied back with a smile as wide as Texas beaming across his face since he was finally receiving the recognition he had so rightfully deserved, "Why yes! In fact, I am a doctor!" The operator then stood up out of his chair and turned his back to Douche, bent over and pulled his pants down to his ankles and said, "Well great, I have been wanting to have this looked at!" Whatdya think? Is this all normal?" Dr. Douche ran out of the control room as fast as he could shouting "I'm not that kind of doctor! NOT THAT KIND OF DOCTOR!!"

When I was in 6th grade I had a math teacher named Dr. Faulk. One day a kid, 11 mind you, called him Mr. Faulk in class and the old piece of shite dressed the poor guy down in front of everyone. This sack of shite must have been 60 years old. I hated that dude, such a humorless prick. Glad he's most certainly dead.

Doctor or Professor seems okay to me. They earned the degree(s); why not acknowledge them?

They are Doctors.

Any professor with a PhD should be addressed as ‘Doctor’ by their students unless they tell you otherwise.

Yep, we were being called doctors, back when those medical types were still called barbers. To earn a PhD you've got to contribute new knowledge to humankind. An MD or DO is just a professional certification (prestigious, no doubt, but so is a P.E. license).

I say all that just to get under people's skin. In my classes I respond to whatever the student addresses me as. I've had Dr., Mr., Captain, Prof., my first name if the student has worked in my lab, etc.

I always addressed folks as Dr., and it was weird getting used to referring to my former advisor and committee members by their first names.

When you earn the title of Doctorate, you can demand the respect of people addressing you.
If you want to be called "Mister", go to Parris Island and earn the title.

If a student called me captain, I'd correct that student and insist that he use my proper title: commodore.

I have a PhD and when contacting others in the field in academic or research settings, I still use Dr. unless they introduce themselves with their first name or sign an email with their first names.

Professionalism matters.

PS : a dissertation is new knowledge.
