So I believe my old truck died today: updated

She’s an 89 Silverado 4x4 I inherited from my dad about 5 years ago. Only 148k on the odometer.
I decided to drive it in to work since it hadn’t been driven since the cold weather. The transmission seemed not to be able to decide which gear it should be in when goung up hill. Then at lunch I realized the radiator was burst. Then it wouldn’t go into reverse when I was leaving my office.
A very sad day, indeed.
Should I have it fixed, or jack up the radiator cap and park a new truck under it?

1600 to rebuild the transmission if that helps

Just park it in your front yard and mow around it.

I’d check everything out on it, make a list and approx cost, then decide. If you are handy, could be a nice project.

All seem like fairly simple fixes to me, especially if you can take your time since it’s not a daily driver

Those trucks are easy and cheap to wrench on. Don't be a puss...er..millennial...and fix it.

Sorry for your loss. RIP

The bad radiator made the tranny overheat. Check for a used transmission from a salvage yard and order a radiator from Rock Auto. Might get lucky.

You probably didn't have enough antifreeze in the radiator during the cold causing it to freeze and bust. Tranny overheated due to this.
Replace radiator. See if you can get a used transmission from a salvage yard. That model it shouldn't cost too much

2K+ to fix. I would dump it.

Is there any emotional attachment to it? Was it the truck you used to take your sister to the prom?

Pops gave it to you, fix it and keep it

Also a company called Pull-a-Part is all over the place (larger cities) and you can check what vehicle (Make model and year) they have in. Their parts are very reasonable and you'll learn a lot taking their stock apart to get to the parts you need. (You do have a Chiltren's for the truck?)

The transmission might even still be ok. I’ve overheated them before from that same reason and once the radiator was fixed transmission was fine.
May have smoked the fluid so I would change that and the filter.
