It's hard to knock an all time great rock voice like Cornell's, but over time his style got kind of monotonous and predictable to me. And I was a HUGE early soundgarden guy. It's like you knew exactly when he was gonna flex his range in any given song, almost formulaic. which isn't a major knock I guess
Staley had a sneaky great voice. Like id mistakenly think sometimes he was just a unique voice that fit their sound perfectly. Then id hear a certain song and remember that dude was fricking velvet smooth and could sing anything
Perry Farrell is a little like that for me too. sometimes I peg him as more just a distinct sound that fit what Jane's did really well. then id hear that one song and remember holy shite this dude will melt your face off

Cornell
Layne
Eddie
Layne was great though and all 3 are really great.
Older Layne was closer to Cornell, but Cornell had the most talent.

No.
Just no. Too much 80's schmaltz in those vocals. Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns is AWESOME. But still no.

While we're on this subject, just a small reminder that the Singles movie soundtrack is the undisputed greatest soundtrack in history

Cornell certainly had the best voice but I prefer Staley over the other 2.

I think the key is - where do you lie with the bands' songs? For me, it's a no brainer.
AIC > Pearl Jam (at least Pearl Jam Ten) > Soundgarden
Part of it was AIC isn't really grunge. It's a heavy metal band from Seattle with a grungy singer and a grunge outlook. PJ, Soundgarden along with Nirvana form the "Big 3" grunge bands.
Since I'm "older" (meaning, I'm the same age as the guys in AIC) than the average grunge fan, AIC is more in my wheelhouse having come of age during the NWOBHM and embryonic hair metal.

Cornell, Cantrell/Staley, Vedder

Grunge didn't have a specific meaning except for 1 part; to be a non-rock star and who was the biggest rock star in the grunge era? EV/PJ.....Cobain was a distant 2nd.
For me (I'm an older guy too) AIC with Staley could put out Jar of Flies today and we'd like it.....same with Ten. A lot of other "grunge" was definitely fad-ish.

Does he deserve to be, is that the question?

Gold, Frankensense, and Myrrh
And if so, who answers?

I don't know what raw talent is but Cornell had the most technique as a singer. Love Lane, but my favorite's gotta be Eddie, he had the most heart.

He was terrible live. Not a very strong voice. Love some of their songs though

This thread prompted me to go back and listen to AIC - Dirt. That is a damned fine album - start to finish.

Overall musical talent - Cornell
Pure vocal talent - almost too close to call, but Cornell by a nose (ahead of Staley).
