Cornell had the greatest range and voice by far.

Layne could have played in any type of band...he was a terrific hair metal glam boy in his first real band.

Vedder...meh. I liked Andy Wood better.

What if Green River had never broken up?

They’d be equal to Mudhoney. And Seattle music would have been less of a thing.

Pearl Jam was and still is huge. Near national treasure status.

One way to do some comparison of Chris Cornell and Eddie Vetter:

My vote goes to Vedder. He is the best songwriter of the three by far. And probably the best guitarist of the three.

And his voice is simply amazing. He never has a gringeworthy performance. I pick his voice over the others because almost every hard rock band post Pearl Jam has tried to emulate his voice and record companies have tried to commercialize his sound.

But there’s nothing like the original

This is subjective, though. I don't care for many PJ songs other than the tracks on Ten and maybe the odd track like Better Man.

With Staley, he didn't start carrying his load of songwriting until Dirt and then the band really took off.

Cornell - I was never that big a fan of Soundgarden, although I really dig about half dozen of their songs. But, I like almost the entire Audioslave debut album.

Vedder's voice is in the deepest register of the three and has the lowest extreme, then Cornell, then Staley probably had the highest voice and the highest extreme. Their voices are reasonably similar enough for comparison, particularly Cornell and Vedder.

As far as guitar - their bands were blessed to have guys who can contribute guitars as well as lead vocals, but none are particularly "good" guitarists - Cornell was okay in accompanying himself and Vedder may be a little better in that regard, but for their bands - I think Cornell is comparable (and, frankly, for his "main" bands, much as I think of Thayil, neither he nor the noisemaker are as good as Mccready) for playing rhythm with the band.

On the other hand, I think Layne (who is underrated as a rhythm guitarist himself) had the best lead guitarist of the group - Jerry Cantrell is criminally underrated - a throwback, old school, electric guitar player of the highest order.

I must admit, to me this is like picking your favorite supermodel.

Agree on Cantrell. He is amazing really. And wrote most of AIC songs. Not sure how much Layne wrote other than Angry Chair and a few other songs.

Cornell is a brilliant songwriter in his own right. All the soundgarden stuff is outstanding. Audioslave songs are mostly Cornell and they are great songs. Not to mention his solo stuff like Seasons. And the Temple of the Dog album. I highly recommend his live solo album Songbook. It is excellent.

You only like the Pearl Jam stuff from Ten? And a few randoms?
You sir are missing out imo. Their catalogue is endless.

Vs and Vitalogy are fantastic albums.

Vedder destroys Cornell on that track.

Only if you look at the liner notes is this a fact. None of us know how many of his songs were rejected by the band prior to Dirt.

Facelift:

Lyrics to Man in the Box, Love, Hate, Love, Confusion, Real Thing; co-wrote lyrics (Cantrell) I Can't Remember

Sap:

Lyrics to Am I Inside

Dirt:

Music and lyrics to Hate to Feel and Angry Chair

Lyrics to Rain When I Die (I think his best outside Nutshell), Sickman, Junkhead, Dirt, God Smack ( )

Jar of Flies:

All lyrics except No Excuses and Don't Follow (and the instrumental Whale and Wasp)

(I see conflicting reports as to whether he wrote the music to Nutshell. Wiki on Jar of Flies says Cantrell and Inez wrote the music. Nutshell and Unplugged wiki suggest Staley is the lone songwriter. Regardless, that is one of the best songs of the 1990s - and the Unplugged version is even better.)

Alice in Chains:

All lyrics except Grind, Heaven Beside You and Over Now.

Music and lyrics to Head Creeps.

Vedder is the best writer. The other two neck and neck vocally.
