For the old timers: have you ever seen anything like this with LSU?

In any sport? I'm 33 and have never experienced something this chaotic as an LSU fan.

Does Joe Dean and Curley Hallman ring a bell?

Not that I can ever recall. Of course back in the day there wasn’t all this instant information. The agents weren’t as savvy and college football wasn’t as big in the country.
The closest thing I can recall was the Brady and JJ hirings. Then there’s Pokey..

Yes. From Mike Archer to Curly Hallman. Wallowing in the bottom of the barrel slime is about to happen if we lose Canada and Aranda. It will be early ‘90s all over again with 3-9 seasons.

No. Even the Curley stuff was not so fast or precipitous as this.

Yes. In 95' and 97' when we were thrilled to attend the Independence Bowl.

The shills and trolls are out baw, just learn to spot fake news when you see it.

Unfortunately a lot dumbasses take the bait, our fanbase is fricked in the head.

Much worse. But social media and the flow of unsourced and unreliable mis-information exacerbates the problem more. That’s the big difference. Also, A&M was not in the picture back then and they can outbid anyone in the SEC for coaches, except for maybe BAMA.

Depending on how far you go back, LSU had no where near the facilities they do now so a regroup with the right leadership can happen fairly quick.

Not this bad

Social media fuels Confirmation Bias within the low common denomination of our fan base. Considering that we are often referred to as both the 'best and worst' fan base, this creates quite the mess.

Case in point...In real life, I don't have a single, similarly LSU aligned friend who thinks or feels the way that is commonly expressed on this board. If anything, quite the opposite.

Then pick up a book. This whole thing isn't anywhere close to chaotic relative to past Athletic Dept. issues. The only difference is the prevelance of social media, message boards, and the internet with thousands of people simultaneously working themselves into a complete frenzy

This was a cover from Sports Illustrated in 1985

Feel free to read the article. The AD is appearing before a grand jury on claims that he bugged his office to eveasedrop on the NCAA. Dale Brown, who was constantly fighting with the NCAA, is being investigated for recruting violations. Can you imagine what the Tiger Rant would have been like then?

LINK

LSU fired Broadhead because he spent money like a teenage girl (though he did hire some good coaches - Skip Bertman, Bill Arnsbarger, Sue Gunter). Joe Dean gets hired with the mandate to save money at all costs. He hires Curly Hallman because he's cheap. Later on Dale Brown's constant fighting with the NCAA cripples the basketball program to a degree where the still haven't fully recovered.

This is FAR from the most chaotic time at LSU

Mike Archer

It worked for a couple of years, but turned into a dumpster fire, quickly.

You haven't lived LSU sports if you missed the Bob Brodhead days. Read his book.

I'm 57, don't know if that qualifies me as "an old timer," but, are you kidding? Read up on Huey Long and his involvement with LSU football in the 20s and 30s. LSU football and sports in general has always been hampered by various political hacks who have some say-so on coaches' hirings and firings. This is nothing new. It's a change from the Mark Emmert days, to be sure ... but LSU under Emmert's watch was the exception, not the rule.

The closest analogy is when Bill Arnsparger left. We didn’t have an AD. Dale Brown and the good ole boys didn’t want Arnsparger as AD so he left abruptly for Florida who did hire him as AD. So we promoted Mike Archer (which was common back then) to Head Coach and hired Joe Dean as AD. Dean was a tight arse, unwilling to spend money and that’s why we were stuck with coaches like Hallman and DiNardo.

Thing is, most of us lived through the Emmert tenure, and so many miss it, badly.
