My dad bought me this nylint crane as a kid i loved it. seems like a rip-off of tonka or was this a privately-branded tonka?

You were a little too young for the heyday of Star Wars toys (1977-1984). As for Star Trek toys, I think they were big in the sixties and seventies.

right, that was my point. The one guy responded with "you shittin me?", so I was explaining why some of us wouldn't really understand or recognize the importance of the Star Trek/Wars toys.

I was never really into GI Joe...(He-Man was the thing growing up)

But that GI Joe is probably the GOAT...most iconic male toy of all time.

The Barbie of male toys.

I bet if you had an original in the box 1st edition it would go for thousands.

The main takeaway I've gotten from this series is that kids are suckers and the toy manufactureres know it.

I got crucified on this board for saying Star Wars wasn't popular for a few years. I thought I was the only one who remembered that. Some people just don't want to admit there was a time when the world didn't revolve around their little space movie. By the time TMNT came out, no one gave a shite about Star Wars.

A couple of notes on the original action figure.

As you can see, G.I. Joe came in a closed, sealed box. You knew if you were getting the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine G.I. Joe, but you didn't know his hair or eye color.

One of the hard to find items outside of a city with a large toy store was the G.I. Joe Army or Marine helmet. No one in South Louisiana carried them separately, so you'd have to buy the footlocker to get one. When I bought my huge footlocker, someone had broken into it in the store and taken the helmet.

Did anyone else have one of these?

For some reason they were weirdly popular.

And while this was a gem:

This was the most sought after:

It's amazing how Kenner botched that sweetheart deal for Star Wars.

They got 95% of the proceeds and only had to give Lucas half a nickel for every toy sold.

And all they had to do was pay Lucas $10,000 a year to keep the rights forever...but they screwed that up.

Finally started this show. Watched the Star Wars and GI Joe episodes.

fricking great show. Really cool to see behind the scenes planning and marketing they did to completely brainwash me throughout my childhood.

Yeah the He-Man one was pretty cool mostly because those guys are such goofballs and the back story of the state of the toy industry then. The bit about She-Ra was funny.

Overall, in retrospect the entire He-Man world was so odd with many "plot holes" or inconsistencies with the various powers and abilities, but as a kid it was awesome, a spooky bizarre world.

I watched those two as well.

The Transformers one was interesting, but a little confusing with all of the Japanese companies in play. Really interesting that the Japanese G.I. Joe morphed slowly into the Transformers.

Lego was pretty boring (as Legos are).

The running thread in these docs is the trouble that toy companies have synching with trends and the right film/TV properties. A lot of "the right toy at the wrong time" stories.

I never really had a lot of Star Wars stuff. It wasn't popular for a lot of my friends as well. Born in 79. GI Joe was a lot more popular for us, TMNT later.

Didn't realize that power rangers had a big impact in the toy industry. The other 3 should be top notch episodes.

I want to see a micro machines episode.
