Some historians think he had temporal lobe epilepsy, hyperthyroidism or Wilson’s disease, an inherited disorder that can cause mental instability. He also was drinking out of lead cups which probably didn't help.

Dude was absolutely bat shite crazy. He was good until he was poisoned. He recovered, but he realized he wasn’t immortal and then lost his shite. Had family executed and exiled. I think it all messed him up mentally and he lost his mind. And the crazier shite that he did, the more his sanity was declining.

Much like it will be in 100 yrs and people look back on today. They will use what they find to there advantage and what they find will be very one sided. Funny how history can dramatically change in 50yrs.

I think the craziest actions attributed to him were exaggerations by his rivals to tarnish his legacy, such as him allegedly ordering his troops to march against the sea and to collect sea shells. One theory is that when his armies reached the shores of the English Channel, they mutinied and refused to cross and invade England. Since he could not afford to "decimate" his army (the traditional Roman penalty for a mutiny was to kill one tenth of the men), he agreed not to invade Britain, but forced them to collect sea shells as a shaming punishment for their insolence.

As for his apparent blood lust, to me, it just seems like brutality with a purpose. He was doing what he saw as necessary to hold onto power, and in most cases, it was absolutely necessary. That's just the way Romans did things back then.

It's very true. Politicized Historians are the worst. No matter whether the politics agrees with me or not, it's fraud to twist or spin History to suit a political agenda of the current day.

But it's been going on for centuries. Is it true that Shakespeare's play "Richard III" portrays R.III in a decidedly negative light for political reasons? Of course, a play is not History, but, even today, many fools will watch a Hollywood film and believe that they are watching History. Wouldn't the 16th Century English commoners be even more convinced that a work of fiction would be actual History?

Caligula gets power, makes some reasonable decisions that are politically expedient, then gets sick/poisoned and comes back with a boner for exicutions.

Pretty good argument for the crazy.

This is usually what I find. It sounds like he had encephalitis which caused his outrageous behavior.

It seems likely to have been slander against him.

He also is thought to have had tertiary syphylis, which can affect the brain. Caligula was extremely sexually active for his entire life, with men as frequently as with women. He also engaged in bestiality. It can be said that he was a sick fricker.

Consider what a luxury it was for its time, very expensive and only for the elite. So yes it would have an effect on more just him, but isolated to a particular group. I have read about it in the past and will try to get you a source with information.

Update
As usual there is much debate on the subject like every other subject. But it is generally now known that Rome used lead 200 years earlier than thought, that lead was used in the wine making process in a fairly high dose, used in cooking vessels, used in powder form and rubbed on the inside of the woman's vagina as a birth control device in many instances along with a long list of other uses. Plus of course the lead water pipe. So who knows really.

If I recall correctly, he was one of the original arse eaters. Got the whole arse eating trend started. Does not get the credit he so rightly deserves
