President Trump announced Monday that he is drastically scaling back two national monuments established in Utah by his Democratic predecessors, the largest reduction of public lands protection in U.S. history.

Trump’s move to shrink the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments by more than 1.1 million acres and more than 800,000 acres, respectively, immediately sparked an outpouring of praise from conservative lawmakers as well as activists’ protests outside the White House and in Utah. It also plunges the Trump administration into uncharted legal territory since no president has sought to modify monuments established under the 1906 Antiquities Act in more than half a century.

His decision removes roughly 2 million acres from the two sites, which potentially could now be leased for energy exploration or opened for specific activities such as use of off-road vehicles.

Good. Clinton stole that land from the state of Utah, announcing the new national park from Arizona because he was too chicken to go into Utah to do it.

The inevitable lawsuit over this may take the Antiquities Act all the way to the Supreme Court.

Also mentioned lower in the article, ranchers are now free to use it for cattle driving.

Why shouldn't the states be able to own and operate their own lands?

Isn't it a pretty much insane amount of land the feds own in the western half of the country?

Agreed, but we can't just sell public lands to a bidder. IMO, most federal land west of the Mississippi (they own about 75-80%, btw) ought to be open to homesteading.

Because the federal government should control everything. We can trust them.

The rounded-top rock formation to the left looks ideal for the Trump head carving.

That's meant to rustle some jimmies...

Now it's just up to the state of Utah to decide how they want to use that land. The land still had the potential for energy exploration or specific activities such as use of off-road vehicles under the feds. It's just now that potential is under the jurisdiction of the state.

Love Escalante, one of the most spectacular sunset drives in the world. However, it is vast and I can see where it needed to be reduced. Never heard of Bears Ears.

It would be a shame to see these areas exploited for resources, but if that’s what the people of Utah want then

There’s no need for the entire millions of acres of desert to be preserved as a “national monument”
