Winning 8 games a year would be a massive step up for the last decade of Vols football

I know everyone spouts this stuff about A&M being some sleeping giant, but it's tough sledding in the SECW. Maybe Sumlin was overpaid, but I don't think 95% of coaches can do much better than him. That said, Jimbo is probably in the 5%. I wonder if Kevin would take like $4.5m per at Tenn.

I thought he did make them better, he just couldn't stay consistently over the 8-9 win hump.

He made them better and would be a very good hire for the Vols imo

compared to schiano and doeren he seems to be sane and a decent fit.

The fact that they are taking a poll says it all. And yeah I don't know why they would WANT him. He isn't bad but not real good; however he would give them steady success so maybe they are just tired of kicking and are finally succumbing to reality.

Chavis was his downfall. He was 51-26 in the West, he could do fine here

I think Kevin Sumlin did a better job than Mike Sherman. So by that alone, he made aTm better

Sumlin made some strategic errors. He didn’t stockpile elite lineman, and passed on Jarrett S. The SEC West will amplify any mistakes you make. He was in the CFP poll last year, and currently had a top 10 recruiting class. He is a good coach. His mistakes can easily be overcome.

I think he could have success if they give him time (But they won't). The dude can recruit. I'm curious what his staff would look like.

The Dallas Morning News just released an article debating whether SMU's season was a success, that's the dirty water UT is swimming in.

i see him much like les miles, he did great with the team he came into, but then was just average after that. at least with les he recruited so well the talent often overcame his shortcomings as a coach and often won in spite of his poor game day decisions and lack of coaching quite often.

not to say he isnt a good coach, just that he "may" not be a guy to come in and right away make your team a playoff contender but he can give you winning records every year and thats what they need right now.

not all coaches are great recruiters and not all great recruiters are great coaches (miles) so its hard to get both in one package and sometimes teams need to accept reality they arent going to hire themselves into a national championship.

i see UT as a dumpster fire and right now they need stability and sumlin can be a good to above average coach right away and with the right recruits compete again for SEC CG

Why have an AD? Just hire your next coach based on internet polls.

I would say he did over his 2 predecessors Much better overal and

Dennis Franchione 5 years
0-3 in bowls
Never Ranked
2 losing seasons
Overall - 32–28
Big12 - 19–21

Mike Sherman 4 years
1-2 in bowls
Ranked 1 year Coaches-21 AP-19
2 losing seasons
Overall - 25–25
Big12 - 15–18

Kevin Sumlin 6 year(in the toughest division of the toughest conference most of those years)
3-2 in bowls and team likely goes to a bowl this year
Ranked twice Coaches-5 & 18 AP-5 & 18
6 Winning seasons
Overall - 51–26
SEC - 25–23

He was clearly trending down, however.
