I forgot that ya'll were playing last night and just saw that you lost to the Sand Aggies (grats Tech).

At 6 wins, Herman got one more win than Charlie Strong did (actually, I think Strong's first texas team may have won 6 games).

From the talk around here, ya'll were supposed to be loaded and Herman was going to get you at least in the 8-9 win range this year with better things to come. Certainly if Strong had come back and only won 6 games this year, folks would be calling for his head.

What happened this year?

I'm sure some of it was a new coach struggling in his first year but yeah, they had some ugly losses. Maryland and Tech were bad football teams and they looked abysmal against TCU.

Their biggest win was against a team that lost their qb in the 1st quarter.

For the record, I thought Herman was a good hire and would bring some offensive innovation.

I do know Ehlinger (the freshman qb) was out for a game or two, but Bouchelle (the starter from last year) seemed like a solid QB. I haven't watched the horns play much though.

I still think he will do good things there but this was not the start texas fans were hoping for. They are lucky to be in a bowl game.

Ehlinger threw some crushing interceptions. Had opportunities to beat OU, OSU, USC, and should have beat TTU last night.

I'd expect them to be pretty good next year. The defense completely turned it around after that Maryland game.

Sometimes it takes longer than one year to turn a program around, especially one that is coming off three straight losing seasons.

I think Texas has a chance to be really good next season.

they have routinely recruited really well and went into this year expecting to already have the ground work built and just needing the last piece to get them into the 9 win area

they lose a whole lot of their defense. they could be better but im not sure

I agree with you but that was also the things that were said after every season Strong was there.

Texas played football this year? Didn't see them or hear much about them. They fell off the map a long time ago. Not relevant. Pretty bad when the biggest program in Texas fell to #5 Texas football school (behind TT,TCU,Houston,Baylor) lately

That's almost an understatement. He kinda single handedly lost three games by himself with those throws.

In skimming through the recap from last night, apparently he threw an INT with less than 3 mins to go in the game on a 3rd and 2 -- while a QB shouldn't throw that, I would think the OC would call a run play of some sort to make sure time goes off the clock.

Like LSU I think it takes a couple of seasons to develop the culture you want. Even if your team is talent laden it doesn't mean they are players you feel comfortable with going forward. The biggest problem seems to be the fan base that wants instant gratification and almost immediately turns on its coach at the first sign of adversity.
Even if the administration tries to be patient they're dealing with constant bombardment by influence peddlers, social media and other purveyors of ill will that eventually take their toll. It seems the worst enemy of the athletic department is the big booster who didn't get his way when it comes to the coaching hire. Tom Herman can coach. Ed Orgeron is better than he's been given credit for. Judge them fairly after year 3.

Every new coach gets a pass in their first year

Next year Herman really needs to take a big step

Yep. And if we wised up and pulled Jacob parks, our game is completely different. They had 3 interceptions on balls where the receiver was open and parks overthrew them right into the defenders hands.

I think realistically the goal was for 8-9 wins this year so in that regard this season was a bit of a disappointment. But if you add some context the year wasn’t awful — losses to USC, OU, OSU by a combined 11 points. Herman seems to have carried over the stigma of playing up to teams and more alarmingly playing down to bad teams.

Ehlinger has been horrid throwing the football and that position needs to be the first one addressed in the offseason.

That was the one game improvement over last season.
