Our Dachshund is paralyzed from a fall. Anyone dealt with this before?

Our 7 year old dachshund Cappy jumped from our couch while we were out and ruptured a disc in his spine. The LSU Vet School wanted up to $5500 to "try" to get feeling back in his hind legs. Couldn't swing that and the very little feeling he did have is gone leaving his rear legs with no feeling at all. He has no pain and will walk easily on his front legs when you lift his rear end up. Just curious if anyone has used a dog wheelchair before? The pros and cons of using it? I absolutely don't want to put the dog down since he is not feeling any pain and reacts to everything as if he isn't hurt. Love my little man Cappy and just want to try to help him out. Any serious advice?

5500 on a member of a daily is totjly worth it if he has no pain and can still have quality of life

Happened to our toy poodle. We put him down. Things got very messy with a steady drip of urine and he couldn’t poop. He stayed in a corner and wouldn’t really move. I got the feeling he was terrified.

On the other hand I’ve seen videos of wheel chair dogs that are awesome. Just my 0.02

Would go for operation, we didn't a few years back and regret it. Waited too long to decide, heartbreak city.

My sister's Sheltie suffered from some paralysis after getting hit by a car. We rigged up one of those baby bounce things that hangs in a doorway and modified it for the dog so her legs would just touch the floor. I think the dog spent several hours a day standing in that thing. After about a month she was healed enough to walk on her own and lived to a ripe old age. Ask your vet if they know of a similar device you could use.
Best of luck!

Put him down bud.

The only thing wrong with dogs is they don’t outlive us.

There’s no reason to put him down now if he really is in no pain and is acting ok. I’d at least give the wheelchair a shot. 5500 for a procedure that has a good chance of not working is fricking stupid

Very sorry to hear that. Same thing happened to our dachshund too. We didn't have the money for the surgery. He lost control of his "bathroom moments", and had no quality of life. The gut-wrenching decision to put him down was made, and it broke our hearts. I hope everything works out for you, in whatever decision you make.

Happened to my dachshund. Couldn't move his back legs so he drug himself around for a few weeks with his front legs. It was the most pathetic thing youve ever seen. Then he got his feelings back in his legs and lived another 5-6 years. Lived to be 16.

Sorry to hear. Very tough position.

We spent $4k for knee surgery on our 3 year old dog. While it sucks seeing the money go, the dog is better than ever.

I’ve owned 3 dachshunds and this happened to one of them. We chose to put her down. She was 9 at the time.

Dachshunds that do have the disc surgery are never the same after.

They make muscle relaxers you can give them. It will relieve pressure on the ruptured area and in some situations they get some use of hind legs.

Have had it happen to two different ones. One was incontinent and just pissed and shite everywhere. We tried diapers and everything but eventually had to put him down. Was a younger dog. Have one now that's 17 and has some use of back legs. After a week of the muscle relaxers we were able to take him off them and he maintained minimal usage. Just enough for us to keep him alive

Same thing happened to my ex's dog. They dropped $5k for the surgery and the pup was able to walk again. Personally I say go ahead and pay it up. Its a member of the family.

I know its a little too late but next time invest in the puppy steps. My girlfriend at the time got our dog one, a long haired dachshund, because she didn't want to that to happen to the dog.
