Seeing as air is already about 80% nitrogen I’m thinking this is probably just a marketing ploy.

Id prefer $0 over 12 years

Its not that hard to check your tire pressure every few months and put air in them

nonsense, this is a gimmick.

Just regular air that most shops use to fill tires is 78% nitrogen to begin with. So you're paying extra to essentially remove 22% of "impurities" from your nitrogen.

A much more important thing is to make sure that whichever tire dealer you are using has a good system for removing water from their system because water vapor is the killer for tires

My personal experience says otherwise.

Agreed, but I don't have to bother with it.

You will get the same benefit on a street car from a normal compressor with a dryer on it as you will with nitrogen.

It's the water vapor that causes the most fluctuation, dont pay for the extra 22% nitrogen

the minimal benefits that you think nitrogen is providing isn't worth a nickel. you're self convincing yourself its making a difference.

get my Nitrogen topped off each time I rotate my tires and they have never needed more than a 1/2lb to top them off.

I never worry about checking the pressure. Been doing this for like 12 yrs.

A) no you haven't because nitrogen filling hasn't been around for 12 years

B) The alleged advantage pure nitrogen has is that nitrogen molecules are bigger than oxygen molecules and thus won't escape the tire as easily, but just regular compressor air IS 78$ nitrogen so you are talking about 22% of the total AND that assumes that whatever shop you are using keeps their nitrogen system completely water free, because when water vapor gets into a tire and heats up you have oxygen molecules in your tire anyway.

Nitrogen filled tires a complete scam.

I have been jet pilot and mechanic for over 34 years....and Nitrogen in tires has been the standard in aircraft tires for longer than I have been flying. Cars appear to have been doing this (green valve stem caps) for the last 4/5 years. If you dont drive enough to wear the tires out in 4 years....Nitrogen will save you money on tires....it slows the oxygen breakdown of the rubber compounds causing dry rot. Then again ...protecting them from sunlight with RV covers also helps. If you drive 15K miles a year....I wouldnt worry about it. I have access to 6000 lb nitrogen bottle, so I do use it.

Well it most definitely has for at least that long because that is how long I have been doing it.

Maybe it has become more available and talked about recently, but I have been doing it a long time. Maybe I am just a trendsetter

Rising fuel prices have brought greater attention to maintaining proper tire pressure levels as a key to maximizing fuel economy. Nitrogen permeates rubber more slowly than air; promoting stable tire pressure. When Ron Kantor, president of Leather-Rich Inc. in Oconomowoc, Wis., decided to convert his fleet of 20 vans to nitrogen-filled tires in early 2006, he was looking for fuel savings. “We thought nitrogen might save us about 4 percent on our gasoline bills, partly because the tires would run cooler,” says Kantor. “We drive 25,000 miles a week, so even a fraction of a percent in savings makes a difference.” After 18 months, what difference has nitrogen-filled tires made on Kantor’s fleet? “Fuel economy has increased slightly from 12 mpg before nitrogen to an average of 13.5 mpg,” observes Kantor. “But where we’ve seen an even greater difference and cost savings has been our tire replacement cycles. It used to be 65,000-75,000 miles, and now we’re getting anywhere from 107,000 to 120,000 miles on a set of tires.”

I'm in the construction industry. I'd have to get my own damn nitrogen tank to keep mine aired up

no it doesnt, because dry rot happens on the OUTSIDE of the tire, not the INSIDE. What good would having nitrogen inside your tire do?

The ONLY thing nitrogen provides over regular air is larger molecules which results in slightly , and I do mean SLIGHTLY less air loss over time.

I've had nitrogen in my tacoma tires since I bought it 3 years ago and have only had to add air to 1 tire in that time. And I live in Dallas where the temps are more extreme....but lower humidity than down there.

Yes. To save money, I would bleed them out at home before driving to the shop.
