While introducing my young son’s to shooting; I noticed my middle son (7yrs old) always aims with his left eye but wants to hold the weapon right handed. I have been getting him to shoot left handed but was curious if I am missing something.

I'm left-handed and right eye dominant.

I've always shot guns right-handed (that's how I was taught), but learned to shoot a bow left-handed (because it was given to me).

I think anyone can learn to shoot with an off hand if taught early enough.

But I also don't think it matters that much. How many people do you think are walking around shooting a left-handed rifle because they are left eye dominant? Right-handed guns are far more available (I've never owned a left handed gun).

I think being comfortable is more important than shooting with your dominant eye.

get him an eye patch to wear, it takes a little time but he will correct this if he wants to. eye dominance is a learned habit that can be changed.

i am right handed and left eye dominant and the eye patch thing allowed be to use both eyes equally when shooting.

its a muscle memory thing, he can start by learning to hold his left eye shut, that is the first step and it takes a bit of time to teach your body to react to a movement its not used to

I do everything right handed, but shoot left handed. I've been shooting left handed for so long it feels odd shooting a gun right handed.

My son is this way....shoots his rifle left handed, shoots his bow right handed with an eye patch because he’s stronger right handed. He’s all jacked up, but he gets it done

I have this problem, right handed but left eye dominant.

Is closing the left eye while shooting equivalent to using an eye patch over it?

I have been closing my left eye for 20 years, I cant hit shite but is that a decent correction or should I be doing something else?

I tried to shoot left handed last year and I looked like a 3 year old trying to hit a flying target.

Learn to shoot ambidextrously. I am right handed and right eyed dominant but I practice left handed left eye all the time. It is hard to get used to and takes a ton of practice though. Make certain he does a ton of dry firing and stuff like that.

I'm one of those people that is totally against making someone shoot with their off hand to match their "dominant" eye. I'm left handed and my "dominant" eye is my right eye. I think it's a croc of shite though. Just because I see something through the triangle in my hand with my right eye, doesn't make it superior to me. I learned how to close my left and right eye seperate from each other at an early age because I wanted to be able to shoot with both hands. I'm not very good right handed but I'm pretty damn good with my left hand and "non-dominant" eye.

With sidearm, my right hand pointer finger pulls trigger for support. Feels natural as rain for me. With rifles, I shoot left hand on grip and right arm supporting rifle. 100% natural feel as well.

I'm not a technical guy, but throw my two cents in on having him learn it all the same way.

I suffer from this affliction too. I shoot everything right handed except shotguns. I’m drastically better shooting a shotgun left handed.

I'm right handed and left eye dominant... I've always just closed my left eye when shooting a shotgun... another thing I tried recently that helped is only wearing my contact in my right eye. I got the idea of from hearing about putting a piece of scotch tape over one lense on your shooting glasses so you still get full light using both your eyes but your other "non dominant" eye is the one that focuses.

My now 8 yr old is the same way. I had him a Savage 243 youth bolt but it was awkward using his left eye with a right handed rifle. I bought him a CVA youth Hunter single shot. Problem solved. My little girl now uses the 243 so it all worked out.

I am right handed and was right dominate. Cataract in my right eye forces me to go left. Not looking to have surgery to fix it right now. Also never YouTube cataract surgery.
