Regardless of how Clay wants to spin it, ESPN getting out from under one of the worst sports rights deals ever put to paper is a good move long term.

CBS paying SEC 50-60 million for broadcasting rights anually. That's a bargain to what ESPN is paying the NFL for their shite games.

They pay a ton for content itself. Think of the NFL highlights/content that are played in a typical week.

? Good question. Overstated the market? Seems like we used to only get a few games on Sunday, and one on Monday
Market over saturation + Redzone coming into the picture & Chris Hansen being damn good @ his job, has turned football into a ‘binge effect.’
I turn saints game on my tv, Redzone on my computer and I’m given every major play and a complete storyline for each game as they unfold. Making a nice beginning-middle-end to each game. — No need to watch sports center now as I already consumed the best plays in real-time & learned their impact on the bigger picture then, and it isn’t as interesting form then on in ‘highlights’

Meanwhile... NBC, Fox, and CBS pay less than half that.

And that cost is directly funneled down to the consumer, probably every penny of it too. In essence they’re the most expensive video rental store in the world. And we all know how well those fared

Why does it always feel like the entire country is watching Sunday night football, but only a few people watch Monday night? Monday night football used to be a big deal. Is it because of all the entertainment options we have these days? Is it production?
Sunday Night is on Network TV
Monday Night is on Cable
Sunday Night has had consistently better matchups since ESPN moved from Sunday Night to Monday Night and NBC grabbed the Sunday time slot.
Monday Night used to be the best game of the weekend nearly every weekend. It's been pretty mediocre lately.

But the good news is the network would have some serious spending money it hasn’t had in years. Take the $2 billion that it is now giving the NFL, subtract say $350 million for (NFL) rights to highlights, and that still leaves a billion and a half dollars for ESPN to play. ESPN could go on a spending spree targeting CBS’ college football deal with the SEC, a Big 12 deal, baseball post-season, rights to NHL hockey, EPL soccer and a whole buffet table of other properties that would prove beneficial in its negotiations with distributors who would want to lower their sub fees.
If true this would be the most ESPN thing ever.
You're having expense issues due to your large live tv contracts so you dump the most popular sport in America so that you can sign other less popular sports to live tv contracts?
Lol that company will go bankrupt in 10 years. Guaranteed.

NFL should cater to their new target audience and play MNF on Bravo or Lifetime

And then they wonder why their business is going down the shitter.
2 billion dollars for 18 games? About 12 of which are going suck.

Used to be ABC. MNF died when it moved to cable.
A network still has much greater reach than cable.
Plus, MNF was a big deal before NFL oversaturation. Getting to watch football on a non-Sunday was a big deal. Now it isn't.

(Here’s an olive branch to ESPN executives, try and convince the SEC to play its CBS game of the week on campus on Monday nights. That’s at least one way to replace a big audience on Monday nights.)
I will burn ESPN to the ground.

I'd like to see MNF back on ABC network television. Long term the NFL should as well. Sports slowly lose their audience when they become less accessible to maximize short term profits.
NFL network is a great idea. For shows about the NFL, not live NFL games. ESPN is a wonderful partner for the NFL to publicize their sport, but should not be broadcasting the games.

Absolutely. It was a big deal when it was on one of the 3 major networks, on a night that was generally weak for network programing, and the announcers themselves were stars. None of that is true anymore. And as others have said, the matchups used to be premier games. Even hardcore NFL fans have so many options now that it isn't special to have that extra game anymore.

Over $100 million per game

They should have left MNF on ABC
Whether it’s on abc or ESPN doesn’t matter. The other guy nailed it; the production is weak, the matchups usually suck and SNF has stolen the spotlight.
This was discussed a few weeks ago and it’s sad, because most of us grew up with Monday night football being the must watch main event.

Less than that. Don't forget ESPN pays the NFL 300-400 million a year for rights to all NFL media (NFL Films etc,) in order to show highlights all week and feed their numerous discussion shows.
