Regal Cinemas To Charge Moviegoers More For Blockbusters

If you’re the kind of person that only ever goes to the cinema to see the latest big-budget blockbuster everyone’s talking about, things could get a little more expensive as Regal Cinemas are set to trial an ambitious new pricing structure. Numerous studies and statistics have shown that the cinema industry hasn’t exactly been thriving in recent times. Economic recession, the rise of online streaming services and illegal movie piracy have all played their part in declining cinema revenue, with less people willing to shell out their hard-earned cash for the cinema
However, Regal Cinemas and Atom Tickets LLC are planning to trial an alternative in early 2018. As reported by Bloomberg, the Regal Entertainment Group will test demand-based pricing; essentially meaning that popular movies will cost more to see and flops will be cheaper. The chain is hoping that the new prices will boost revenue and increase attendance during off-peak hours

Hmmm, raise prices during a recession in the industry? Don't think that will work out the way they intend it.

Yeah, I’ll stick with AMC (which is already high, but I go to IMAX or Dolby showings when available)

It seems logical to charge less for lesser demanded movies and more for higher demanded movies.

They even already kind of do this with a matinee showing being cheaper than a prime time showing

I wonder how this would work with MoviePass. Will MoviePass place restrictions like they do with 3D/Imax? We have an NCG Theater that is just as close to our house as the Regal theater and is only like 7 or 8 bucks for all movies with unlimited popcorn, soda, and candy. They have the leather reclining seats as well, so it looks like they will get all of our business from here on out if Regal goes down this path.

I would pay a higher price to see Star Wars if it means seeing crapper movies for like $4 or something. The problem is, they will go high on blockbusters and not drastically lower on less rated movies. Wanna know how to increase butts in the seats during slow times like Jan and Sept? Lower the prices down to $4 and put concession sales, like a special sized combo cup for drink and popcorn for $10. Make it worth seeing when you are bored. That's why redbox is killing movie goers. You can get a movie for what $2 now at redbox? When I worked at the movies as my first job in high school, I saw many movies I wouldn't normally see because it was free. The same can be said for cheaper tickets. Why pay the same for something you have no idea what the movie is about as you would for Star Wars.

Well Regal better improve the quality of their screens- because after going to Movie Tavern to see the same film last summer the difference in quality of picture and sound was HUGE. I won't go to Regal if I can help it after that.

Or decrease the price of tickets over time. There's plenty of nerds that will pay $20 or more to see Star Wars opening weekend but maybe you can reduce the price every few weeks.

This will surely bring people back to the theaters in droves.
Fool proof plan they got cooking here.

Yeah...
Charge $25 like Live at Met Opera...
For DC and Marvel films for the first couple of weeks.
Then go back to normal. They will make a ton of money gauging comic book audiences.

Holy crap that's expensive. We go on Tuesday's and get a medium combo and one ticket for $13 at NCG.

Poor Movie Pass
It'll come out even for them. Paying more for popular movies and less for stinkers.
Regal is doing this to get more people out for the lesser films.

This blows me away. I would rather spend $6 to rent at home and not have to run to Redbox twice to pickup and return. My time is worth far more than that.

I saw the Princess Bride re-release and there was maybe 15 people in the theater and they all looked over 65.
I was thinking...80's films are now old people films? What the hell?
It's comic book or bust apparently.
So theaters can definitely charge an arm and a leg for any Marvel movie...the minions will come.

Thats the point im making. The same movie costs less during lower demanded slots. That still makes it a less demanded product that costs less.

I prefer streaming at home as well, but I also know I pass up like 6 red boxes on my way to and from work so it's not an inconvinence for me. And really, taking two mins of my day to stop isn't a waste of time if it can bring my family two hours of happiness.
