Why isn't Barry Switzer mentioned more in GOAT CFB coach conversations?

.837 winning percentage (4th highest all-time)

Finished ranked top 3 in the AP polls nine times (tied with Bowden and Paterno for #1 all-time except Switzer did it less than half the time- 16 seasons compared to Bowden's 40 and Paterno's 46)

Won 12 conference titles in 16 years

12-5 record against Tom Osborne (Switzer beat Osborne like a drum in pretty much every big game they coached against each other)

Only man to win a national championship with a true freshman starting QB

Also the only man who can get away with rocking a fur coat in his 70s

Cause he was an idiot with a potential goat.

Played a crappy schedule

And then half the team was busted for shady shite...

And then he won a SB by inheriting Jimmy Johnson's juggernaught.

Oklahoma was a total mess in the 80's - way worse than Miami...some great football teams but just - I'm surprised they weren't the first SMU before SMU.

Drank many beers and just as many stories with the King. Just turned 80 yesterday and is beloved to those he calls friends.

Switzer also coached a team to win the Super Bowl.
But that cheating thing.....

I think it's because there is Nick Saban and then everyone else.

Played in the Big 8. Only had one game that was a challenge

Being a blue blood gets you the benefit of doubt and ranked higher early and you don't drop far when you lose. See tOSU this season. Bama, USC and all other blue bloods benefit from this.

Again, Big 8.

This is the most impressive criteria. Surely dominated Nebraska which was a solid blue blood at the time.

Not as tough back then as it is today. They didn't pass the ball much.

I find Barry Switzer to be a fascinating character. If anyone has some stories of him at OU, please share them.

Idk, it’s likely the perception of his program due to all the knuckleheads that comprised his teams especially at the tail-end and the NCAA imposition of probation that corresponded with Switzer’s decision to resign. We exclude all that, Switzer was probably one of the greatest coaches in history of college football top 5 and led arguably the most unstoppable wishbone attack ever to compliment great defensive teams.

Barry switzer had 1 loss or less in 8 seasons....

Meaning he would have likely been in a 4 team playoff 8 times if they had that back then.

He won 3 titles as it is, but could have had even more in modern times.

No clue why he gets overlooked so much in the GOAT conversation.

The cheating thing doesn hold weight to me at all. Because coaches like Bear and Wooden (different sport I know) have some legendary cheating stories but it was never made public/nobody cared then

I just saw a list where he was listed #12 all-time.

Top 10 was:

10. Nick Saban
9. Bobby Bowden
8. Woody Hayes
7. Osborne (that's bullshite - he was better than Osborne) Osborne didn't win shite until 20 years after he started coaching Nebraska.) Osborne had every team in the 80's ranked in the Top 5 at the end of the year because they played nobody - he had usually one loss - Oklahoma and then he'd play his bowl game and LOSE - always.

outside of the Big12 Osborne couldn't beat anybody.

Nebraska went 2-9 from 1980-1991 in bowl games against Top 25 opponents. Nebraska was just like Notre Dame is now.

Then he flipped thw switch to compete with the big boys by offering supremely talented malcontents that couldn't make grades for most schools.

6. Frank Leahy
5. Joe Paterno
4. Bear Bryant
3. Knute Rockne
2. Pop Warner
1. Fielding Yost

My claim to fame with BS - I got to take a piss in the urinal next to him at a Popeye's in North Little Rock one night. He was raising hell about no paper towels.

Oh yeah, the dude is short.
