Thoughts on the insane buyout

Did Alleva guarantee this full contract not because he didn't realize how stupid it was but because he knew it'd buy Orgeron more time to hopefully be successful when he knew odds are he wouldn't be, thus buying Joe more time since his fate is supposedly tied to Orgeron.

everyone is smart enough to figure that you guarantee a coach X amount of his contract so that you have a commitment to coach for 3-5 years. how can you recruit when you are year to year? the kids like to have some assurance the coach that brought them in will probably be around while they are on the team.
no if you are angry about the specific amount as to being too high, that's understandable.

Possibly on the Alleva angle, plus, as a coach, the perception is bad if you have a low buyout...shows low commitment from university.

Buyout should have been the lowest in D1 football. O would have signed anything.

No coach has a fully guaranteed contract except O. Buyouts are usually a set figure and not the full term.
And the lack of buyout excuse is a shitty one. Most elite coaches don't have buyouts.

Alleva's fate being tied to Orgeron doesn't mean he won't be fired until Orgeron is fired. Their jobs are separate from one another. Hiring a coach who goes, say 5-7, in his first season, could easily get Alleva fired.

The contact was originally drafted for Herman to hold off Texas. When Alleva moved to Ed O the buyout section was never revised.
NO WAY IN HELL, did Ed O merit a $12m buyout. Period!

That's actually what's being said as truth in the media.

Alleva didn't change it because he never thought things would be like this in year 1.

How much is Alleva’s buyout? Make Miles the AD and pay him to do that rather than nothing, fire Alleva, and call it a day. And if you want to get rid of O, do it, but as much as I want him wrong I’ve been convinced that we gotta give him a second year to protect the image of how we will treat a head football coach here.

If true, that is pure negligence.

Some of that was hinted in that hayride article. Alleva was miffed after the Herman camp said they wanted to see what Texas was offered before signing with LSU, and he just adjusted the base salary of the Herman contract and presented it to Orgeron. I guess forgetting how big the buyout was.
The buyout part I'm super skeptical of since I'm sure a lot of people have to approve the contract, but I don't get why it was 12 mil.

I know, right? Still waiting to see Saban on the Texas sideline.

The buyout is only $12 mil this year and goes down to $8.5 mil in 2018 right?
I mean I think its bad enough that LSU fans should be pissed, but at the same time who hires someone expecting them to be fired in year 1? Year 2 and 3 buyouts are still horrible considering O's other head coaching options, but they aren't ridiculous like $12 mil lol.

No expert, but my understanding is you reserve buyouts if you feel your candidate will be a hot commodity down the road, which in no way applies to Orgeron.
Alleva doing that to add artificially longevity to his hire..........would not be surprising. Probably more believable than sheer oversight when adjusting the contract.

You could have still offered a buyout of around 4-6 Million which would have been substantial. Schools usually put buyouts in place so other schools or NFL won't poach their Coaches. Coaches and schools mutually benefit from buyouts. In this case only Coach O was going to benefit. Nobody other school would poach Coach O. In 2015 Coach O was making $450,000 a year as DL coach. If he does get fired this year he would make $15.5 Million.
